I always see their name come up in knife discussions, and took a look at their web page...and am just wondering why the love for them?

Are their products really that much better and worth the money compared to a cheaper mass produced option, or is it more the whole nostalgia thing?

Their higher-end folders are fantastic. Great carbon steel blades that will take a razor sharp edge in no-time. I carry a little two blade folder with a liner-lock (#5201LL). That little knife has gutted and skinned more deer and fish than I can remember. They are definately worth the money over the cheaper mass produced knives that tend not to hold an edge and take hours to sharpen. The only down-side, if your looking for one, is that they do rust. But a few swipes with an SOS pad or wire brush, and a shot of Rem Oil every now and then solves that problem.

Also, Moore Maker is Aggie owned.

I’m ordering the Maroon and White Trapper today. This will be my first knife from them so we’ll see how it goes.

The first thing made was a pair of fencing pliers from an old design that was no longer available.

It was a very big hit with the locals in Matador. So the guy went into business and makes several different tools. Or at least used to.

He does not make the knives. Those are farmed out to another company under his label. But I have several and really like them.

This is probably on his web-site.

Knives are produced by Camillus (recently closed factory for good) and Queen.

I have a single blade Camillus that my father gave me a few years before he died. It is one of my greatest possessions.

I had not heard that they closed.

Camillus has a six month labor strike last year that pretty much ended any hopes they had of continuing as a business concern. Same old tale you see everywhere in the US manufacturing sector: unable to compete with cheap Chinese imports, aging union labor force, and underfunded pension plans.

In my experience, the knives that sharpen more quickly are softer steel, and tend to lose the edge, or even roll...like a Gerber. Seems that holding an edge and sharpening quickly are mutually exclusive?

In the Southeast Texas humidity, that definitely can't be a good thing. Any reason they don't use stainless...especially if they're farming them out?

Possibly because they were originally made for the West Texas market (Matador), and it has grown from there. Not much worry over humidity in that area.

Just a guess of course.

Moore Maker = Nice.

Maker's Mark = Nicerest.

I just don't think I can talk myself into a carbon blade. Even with a patina, for my uses, I think I'd be better off with stainless.

Keep it oiled.

That's what I'm saying.

For something that I'm just going to throw in my pocket in the morning, then in the valet at the end of the day, or on a long hunting or camping trip where mineral oil and steel wool aren't available, I think that stainless might be a better option.

They do look like great knives as far as the type goes, just not sure it's for me.

You've just hit on a topic of eternal discussion among knife enthusiasts. The old-timers favor carbon steel. Guys with a more utilitarian bent see nothing wrong with using a good grade of stainless steel like 440c.

I carry a stainless steel pocket knife myself even if I am an office jockey. It's just easier to take care of.

That's what it seems to me. Carbon seems to be more about the nostalgia (as well as ease of sharpening), and stainless more of a practicality standpoint.

I guess that's why I favor stainless, though I can certainly see the appeal of Moore Maker, even if outsourced to a New York company.
