Would this info sway you for or against?

Maybe I should say if a 22LR pistol/revolver was all you had would this be the best ammo?

quote:
Firearm : Walther P22 with 3.4" barrel length

Block calibration : 8.9cm at 586 ft/sec

Shot 3 - Aguila SSS 60gr lead roundnose. Penetrated to 13.1" and turned on its side at 8.0", creating the largest permanent cavity of the entire penetration. No bullet deformation present.

Has anyone here tried these rounds in a semi-auto pistol?
If they have, which gun and how did they cycle?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't more shooting fatalities occur from .22's than any other caliber?

Assassins and mobsters notwithstanding!

Measurements of the 22SSS bullet appear to be 0.22" Diameter X ~0.6" Long.

Probably. .22 gets pretty good penetration with the high velocity and small cross section, and people are so careless with them, like they're not real guns. Plus, what are your most inexperienced shooters generally shooting?

A penetrating shot into the cranial vault with a .22 wil ruin anybody's day. I looked at an x-ray picture of one once and all they called it was a "metal snowstorm."

Even if it does not fragment you get this:

I've read that 22's are most common.

Grandfather was a cop. He tells the story of some guy robbing a convenience store back in the day. The owner pulls a 22 and shoots the guy 6 times. The guy takes the gun away and beats the owner to death with it. Robber gets in car and goes home and two days later shows up at hospital. He died 2 days later of an infection.

Not exactly the terminal ballistics I was looking for.

Moral of the story - if you're shooting them with a 22, save the last bullet for their knee or foot so at least you can out run them until they die.

I was told that the .380 actually causes more fatalities, but the answer is not 'killing'. The answer is stopping, and a .22 requires the best luck to get a 'stop'. Very few people are good enough to make the .22 headshot under self-defense conditions.

I say this as a guy who owns (and occassionally carries) a .22 pocket pistol.

Here's the line: ".22....its better than a knife."

More seriously, a hit in the center head or heart, where you should be shooting anyways in a life or death situtation, will kill you just as dead with a .22 as with a bazooka.

You'd think that a .22 would be a lot easier to aim.

A head shot with any gun is bad news.

well...
If it's all you got, it'll slow 'em down, and if you're lucky, you may kill.

The three principles for a self defense gun as explained by a gunsmith I used to work for are:

1. MUST GO BANG. Everytime you pull the trigger.
2. You must actually be able to hit what you aim for (in a quick defense, self-protection situation, no aiming involved. Hope you practiced enough!)
3. The bigger the hole, the faster they leak.

Your .22 probably has two of the three qualities. The third though is somewhat important!

A pellet gun in the hands of a mad woman is more deadly than any man-stopper you have.....just the way the world turns....

Lots of lip-stick-on-the-collar guys have been shot dead dead in their track with a little .25 auto.............

I'm surprised that no one here has pointed out the fact that 22 is NOT a good self defense round. U may kill the guy, but not before he kills you and walks out of your house. Then he may bleed to death.

People watch too many movies. Quite often, a gun shot does not take someone out right away. Shot placement is what counts. Whether it is a hollow point or not, U will not get any expension from that 22 round. Its too small. Heck, 25 cal and 32 cal hollow point bullets almost never expand either.

Carry what ya want, but relying on a 22 cal round for self defense is NOT a good plan. Especially when U might be dealing with an armed opponent.

Amen Mistershipwreck.

Even a shot to the head with a .22 is not a sure thing. Stick with 9mm or bigger.
