Does anyone know if trichinosis can be transmitted by entering say a cut or other open wound on the skin? I know that it is aquired by ingesting undercooked meats (esp. wild game). I have a buddy who swears that he contracted trichinosis years ago because he cleaned an infected hog. I have heard that CWD and other blood borne bugs can cross over. Just wnating to know if anyone out there has any experiences. I have been wearing disposable gloves when cleaning wild hogs for several years. I try to remember when cleaning deer, elk etc. Thanks

Specialization is for insects."

No. The acid of the stomach is required to dissolve the hard covering of the cyst. It's not bloodborne

There is also no record of CWD in Texas (to date), or that it can transmit to humans.

Although CWD is not documented in TX, I live in the NW US and hunt and fish from Oregon, Idaho to western Montana and CWD is a very big deal out here. Thought I would throw this in. From what I gather, although not documented, wild game to human may not be impossible.

AC, what is your knowledge of trichinosis in the US in say the last 50 years? Wild hogs primarily, I know is is non-existant in domesticated pork.

The prevalence of trichinosis is something on the order of a dozen cases per year, most of which is from wild game.

It's almost unheard of from farm pork now.

But, AC, you can catch it from bear and cougar meat. No bear jerky next season when you pop another blackie.

The only blood-borne disease I 've heard of that can be caught from hogs or deer is brucellosis (sp?).

Wear the latex gloves when cleaning. If your not cleaning then you can become an amateur proctologist when hunting is slow...
