I went hunting in Star County this past weekend and the bucks were chasing doe's left and right. Saw a few big bucks (10 and 12 pointers) but nothing worth shooting. For some reason the monster bucks that have been spotted through out the season didn't come out.

same here...

the rut has definitely kicked it! but all i've seen are young 8 pointers.... 2.5 to 3.5 year old

heck... that is prolly how long they will live on a low fence property!

It's probably the 2nd rut.

Yeah all the bucks I saw were young 2-3 years. I was hunting in a high fence ranch that is managed well. The only mature buck I saw was that 10 pointer but he wasn't out long enough to get a shot off at him.

Arrived home about 2 hours ago from Webb County. Since last Friday afternoon, I was scouting for culls for the upcoming weekend hunt with our kids. Having spent 14 days in the stand throughout December, this past weekend was the most intense rutting I've seen this year. I'd just as soon the intensity fall off a bit before Thursday...to allow the herd as a whole to chill out a bit when the kids are hunting.

If it's deep S TX, it's the 1st rut... WMA Mgr at the Chap told us they typically rut between Dec 15th & Jan 10th in LaSalle or Dimmit Counties. Saw some bits of chasing/fighting while we were down there on the 17th/18th, but it turned off for the rest of the week.

Talked to the ranch owner where I help him with his mgmt program this evening and he said all he has seen the past couple of days is bucks running does. I am headed there on Thursday morning and hopefully I will be able to put an arrow in the right spot and come home w/ a big smile on my face.

The rut was on at our place in Zavala County between Christmas and New Year's Day, but it looks like the drought did some damage. Most of the bucks didn't develop as much this year as we had hoped.

... in south texas, i don't think so. Rut occurs real late in the season in south texas (webb, zapata counties)

It took five minutes for a yearly buck to come running out in my line of sight after a good rattle! good indication of rutting

I'm in Brazos Cty. Our rut is generally the first part of November. Some years (this year included) we actually see activity start the last few days of Oct.
