I am a Abu Garcia fan for reels for fishing fresh water, but I was given this Shakespeare reel combo for X-mas. Wanted to know if it would be pretty good reel or not???????

I understand they are pretty good for the money. Pflugers are also nice inexpensive reels. The fisherman's ability is way more important than the tackle anyways.

AGREED. The kind of reel you've got will hardly ever be the reason they aren't biting. As long as you're comfortable fishing with it, it's good stuff.

Reminds me of the time we we getting slaughtered by a bunch of VeitNamese with what looked like twine wrapped around coffee cans at the jettys.

Gotta disagree there. The tackle is just as important. The best fisherman in the world won't have much to show for it if his equipment fails. That said, though, it also depends on the individual fisherman. If you fish 1-2 times a year the equipment isn't all that important. If you fish 1-2 times a week cheap tackle just won't stand up to the use and abuse.

To answer the original question the Catera is a decent reel.
