I'm trying to make the duck hunting on my ranch better and I have been told that mossy oak sells a "duck feed." Has anyone used this or anything else that I should try. I hunt Texoma a bunch and they plant Japanese Millet but it is really hard to find in the DFW metroplex. Any suggestions??

If they don't have it, they can find it.

Turner Seeds Waterfowl mix does very well. The Japanese millet and smartweed reseeds each year and comes up great. The downside to Turner is that they don't ship.

Good Luck.

go to the wildlife dept at A&M and ask them what is best for your region. you may even get them to do an undergrad or graduate project on your place for cheap. otherwise you have to get the algae growing for duckweed to blossom. if you really want to get ducks there, take a bucket full of corn, put syrup in it and bury it on the edge of the tank. you'll get birds or pigs....just don't let the corn get exposed because the GW's might not like it.

you can always just let your areas fill up with rain water, then ride around on a 4 wheeler and dump bags upon bags of corn, milo/maise, and millet out on the shores and in the shallow spots. do this from about the end of september through about jan. 1 and you'll have a great season for sure.......just don't tell anybody what you're doing..hehe

I planted japanese millet around our lake back around June. Came up great but now with the heat the water level is receding which could be trouble. Without anymore rain it may not be of any value come September 9th.

in you shadow, from a distance, moving in on your areas when you move out, killing all your ducks and depleting all your fishing holes.....j/k

Thanks guys on the link to Turner seeds. I'm going out in the next few days to their store and pick up their duck mix I think. Either that or the Jap Millet, I'm sure they will both do well.
Another thing I heard is that if I plant it this year that it is illegal to hunt over it this season....is this true??

If you grow it, you can hunt over it. I wouldn't be caught dead over a bunch of seed "that didn't come up", but when it comes to migratory birds the rule stands: If you grow it, you can hunt over it.

Thanks B-1 83. I thought that was the rule but I have had other people in the office tell me otherwise.
