Is my 0.270 enough gun, or do I need to buy a bigger gun like a 300 win mag?

.270, 30-06....etc is plenty of gun. I took mine w/ a 7MM mag but one of the kids took out a beast w/ a .243. All about shot placement!! Good luck!

.270 is plenty, BUT you might as well go ahead and get a new gun while you have an excuse to do so. You can never have too many guns.

Thanks man. I will get a 140 grain bullet and let er fly.

My wife already thinks I have way to many guns.

With good shot placement a .270 will be fine.

I know several people who have taken them with bows that have a lot less power than that .270.

I had that problem too, so I bought mine her own .243 last October for her to start deer hunting with. I sighted it in for her, she took one shot to kill her first deer, and hasn't touched it since. I however have shot it several times since then. It's all about how you spin it. My latest purchase for her was a Springfield XD-40 for her to protect herself with while I was gone. (Hopefully she won't notice that I usually take it with me when I leave.)

Took mine with a .30-06 150 gr.- low chest shot. He soaked it up and ran about 100 yards. Autopsy showed a chunk of his heart shredded. I would recommend something heavy, unless you are in fairly friendly country. The last thing you want to do is chase one of those bad mothers over rough country and have to haul his 300 lbs carcass back.

I used to shoot as many as I could gget in my crosshairs out in West Texas ( they are the Al Quiada of wildlife in Texas). Anything you can get into everyone of them youget a shot at would be GREAT!!!!
That being said your .270 should do the trick; however, they are very tough. I've shot alot of them with a .270 WSM 130 gr.
Shoot every single one you get to put lead in! Who cares if you retreive the stinking ******* or not!!
As "Stonewall" Jackson said after the first battle of Fredricksburg about the yankees that ransacked the town "...... killem, killem all..."

I'm sure you already know this but if you're going to use a different bullet than what you sighted in with, go back to the range with the new bullet. Even the same load by a different manufacturer can make a huge difference.

yea, that is the problem with changing bullets. I really like the balistic tip for white tail, and that is what the gun is sighted for. I am just afraid that the balistic tip is not a good choice for aoudad.

Just shoot every stinking one you see- ewes, lambs, rams- whatever!!!!
People don't realize that they are a vector for disease even to domestic sheep but especially to wild sheep.
Go look at their range in West Texas ( i.e. mountains that they hang out on). The sides of the mountains look like a scale model of the moon!!
I HATE THE G** DAMN THINGS !!!!

if you can shoot it does not matter...I shot one across a canyon with a 22-250.

A 270 with a 130 or 140 grain ballistic tip will be fine out to 350-400 yards. Hit it right behind the shoulder and it will die, it might run a bit but it won't run too far. If you don't want it to run off just shoot it in the base of the neck, there is enough muscle there to absorb the shock of the bullet and not tear up the cape for mounting. I killed mine with a 25-06 with a 100 grain X-bullet handloaded with 60 grains of reloader 19. They are tough animals and make a pretty shoulder mount.

so no worry about the balsitic tip preventing penetration?
aggiejumper

If you are worried about penetration issues, use an AccuBond bullet. It is nearly identical to the ballistic tip but with a thicker copper jacket. It's trajectories are similar to the ballisic tip due to their similarities in size and shape. Use a 140 grain bullet and let it fly. Accuracy is much more important than shear power, shoot straight and the rest will follow.

25-06 using a 120 grain Speer Grand Slam. Shot him at 286 yards just behing the tip of the shoulder and he dropped like a bag of rocks.

The question you should ask about a given round is not "Can I shoot [insert animal] with this round?", but "SHOULD I shoot [insert animal] with this round?".

In this case you should shoot every single solitary audad you see with what ever you have in your hand. Just like you would if it were a coyote!
JUST GET LEAD IN IT !!!!!!!

Its where you shoot it, not what you shoot it with. Ive taken mine with my .243 no prob.

I read an article on ballistic tips fragmenting on the outer rib cage of Elk. I would go with something else. I like soft tips bullets better now as an adult than I did as a kid.

You could always go with a neck shot. The only bone there is the spine which still downs it if hit.

I would never use a ballistic tip on an elk unless it was a 30 caliber and 165 (ideally 180) grains going over 3200fps. Ballistic tips are not designed to penetrate, they release all of their energy whereas a partition or the like are designed for maximum penetration.

Hey, NW80, how do you really feel about the sheep?

Believe it or not Aoudads are neither a sheep or a goat! They don't fall into either category or species.
Yes, I abhore theM****** F*****s and the people who turned them lose in the Trans Pecos.
They compete directly with native widlife for feed and as I said before are a significant vector for disease.
Just ask any TP&W bioligist.
I'm not talking about the " mountain home" Hill Country Aoudads, they are confined in a 8 ft fence

Me and my uncle have been known to rope Aoudads from horseback. Get you some damn good dogs and a horse that's fast as hell and you can catch 'em and make some good money off of them by selling them at an auction.

As far as shooting them, I think everyone else has pretty much covered it......your .270 will be more than enough gun to take them down. I wouldn't sweat the ballistic tips either.

They are sheep.

figured it was time to be a jack--- and provide a taxonomy lesson. It is commonly referred to as a sheep.
They are in the family BOVIDAE--cows, sheep, goats, etc.
subfamily--Caprinae-basically sheep, goats, musk ox
Genus--AMMOTRAGUS-only critter in this genus (though there are several subspecies (if you what to get into that arguement) depending on point of orgin in N. Africa)
Goats are in the genus-Capra
most "sheep"-all North American are-Ovis
So in a purely taxonomic arguement they are not "sheep" (practical no)
To throw another iron in the fire, their scientific name literally means "sand goat".
Ok, enough nerdery (if that is a word)

On the original question--I like either my .308 or .243 pushing Walmart specials (CoreLoks----heck, that should start something) Never had a problem with either.
-And I completely agree, they need to disappear, then again I say that about most exotics

"axe, cow, plow, gun ,and FIRE"--know them and use them

Thanks 80. You are correct on the bearguy comment, bears are my passion. Spent 4 years working with them in NM. Guess it helps that I used to TA mammology and Big Game Ecology (granted, I normally stuck to carnivores).
