Don't blame them for being there. It's still hot AF outside.

Always seemed weird how deer will feed mid-day on the hottest days of the year.

My biggest water oaks have started pouring acorns in the last few days. It's early but maybe due to the lack of rain in the last two months? I have the only good oaks around so it draws everything in from a long ways. Go from holding about one deer per 10 acres to about one per 2 acres. An amazing difference.



Other property is post oak savannah. A tree every 50ft, for miles, in every direction. Thankfully they're empty again this year, like last. Two years back we had the extreme drought and there was a blanket of acorns everywhere you stepped. On bad years, we get a week at the start of archery before they start to fall and then the deer disappear until December.

First went by about 1045 and there were a few deer out head down eating under Live Oaks. When I came back by later in the afternoon and the heat of the day, they were even more Deer out there with heads down eating.

They weren't just hanging out in the shade.

This was between Zephyr and Priddy on the Mills and Brown County line.

Well, Hereford Bull took up the mesquite shade as the story goes.

Mills County is bone dry right now. We were out at the lease Labor Day weekend and it was a dust bowl while mowing.

Last year was the first time our live oaks didn't make squat in over 40 years of living here. They are loaded this year and it is a race to the first tree when I let the ungulates out in the morning. They started dropping last week.

I would rather deer have abundant acorns, to fatten up on, than survive on the miniscule amount of corn from most "feeders"...that is often shared with the coons, hogs, crows, cattle, and squirrels.

Cue the free-choice/heavy protein (and corn) feeder guys, which are greatly outnumbered by the casual corn users.

I don't knock those guys - we have about 7 of them on our place out of 10.

Makes it cheaper and easier to feed protein, and the bucks all know where a good meal is located. During the summer the corn feeder throws for 1 second, it keeps the coons and possums occupied.

That's exactly what I do during summer months. Kind of a candy for deer. I also put a bag of Milo in feeder to maybe help quail and turkey but the Green Jays enjoy.
