Our dog passed away about a year ago. She was never a runner. Our current house, that we moved into about 5 years ago doesn't have a fence. We're considering getting a new pup and I'm guessing I won't hit the "dog will stay in the yard w/out a fence" lottery twice.

My house is in town and we back up to a wet weather creek. The lot is about .75 acre. The back yard is fenced on 3 sides, but the creek is a problem. It's natural with yaupons and other scrub. The creek fence run would be ~300'.

I really don't want a fence along the creek. So invisible fence it is I guess.

Digging/trenching to bury a wire would be a huge PITA due to brush and roots.

Does anyone have experience leaving the wire exposed? Or running in conduit?

The other option is a GPS collar but the cost without knowing if it will work well has me hesitant.

I guess I'm just looking for y'all's experiences.

similar situation here as well. I've been reading about the gps collars but would like some real world reviews.

We have used the underground fence before. We always seemed to eventually have issues with it. And when there is an issue with the wire, you have to find the problem area. On a larger piece of land, that can be a problem. We got frustrated always trying to find where the underground fence was damaged, so eventually, we just zip tied the wire to the underside of the top rail of our fence to hide it, it seemed to work fine that way. Eventually we got tired of that set up as well, so we went wireless.

Went to the wireless Halo collars a couple of years ago, and they have been great. Nice thing about the wireless collars is it is very easy to move the fence perimeter and you can have multiple fences if you take your dogs to another property. The only downside we have had so far with the Halo collars is that you have to charge the collars daily. Not really a problem just have to remember to do it.

I've used Invisible Fence on 2 properties with much success. Trained up the pups with flagged boundaries and the collar did the rest.

I had 3 Dogs on the Pet Safe Wireless system on 2 acres, put one box in front room of the house and one in the back of the house. Dogs could get to most of the 2 acres, probably 1 2/3 acres, and all of the house . Only porblem was the rabbits got bold and would feed on the grass just across the wireless barrier. My Weimeraner figured out to sit in the area where it gave a beep warning and it would run the battery down once it stopped beeping the battery was dead and the chase was on with the rabbit! She only did it duringcertain times of the year but 95% of the year she stayed in the wireless barrier.

Adopted a mutt from the pound a while back, and guessing she has a lot of spaniel in her. Found out the hard way that she can clear my entire fence when motivated, which isn't hard to do. She never runs all that far and always comes back, but I'd prefer her to not jump the damned fence and just stay in the yard so I can leave the dog door open and both of them can go in and out as they please during the day and afternoon.

We have a shock collar she wears that beeps, vibrates and shocks. She knows that beeping sound - works about 95% of the time. Vibrate usually gets her back on track, with the occasional need to shock her when she is chasing a deer or whatever and isn't going to listen. I had bought a hotwire and controller, etc. for the fence but as I mentioned above - she clears the entire fence.

I've read good and bad, about 50/50 on the wireless PetSafe units.

I built our house in 1991 in Flower Mound on 1.5 acres. The wire was buried in mostly dirt. A portion in the back had some sandy rocks. My lot has a slope toward Lake Grapevine. Torrential rains have caused a lot of wire exposer in the back area and I haven't had a single issue there so 30 plus years has been pretty good..

I've got a complete SportDOG Contain + Train System (Fence & Trainer, up to 1 1/3 acres) that I bought in February while my new fence was being built. Haven't needed it since.

It's $399 new on Amazon. I'd sell the complete setup for $200 if anybody's interested.

I've got a Husky. Very smart dog but Huskies are "hard headed". We have 1.6 unfenced acres. I'd love to let her run but had one incident where she ran onto neighbor's property. I wasn't worried that she'd run off, but rather concerned that she might be hit but some driver. I've kept her on a leash ever since.

I considered the Halo collar a couple of years ago but they were expensive (not a problem) but didn't want to drop the money if it didn't work. I see they have dropped the price but also now have a 90 satisfaction guarantee.

Does anyone have feedback on the product? I am concerned about the Husky stubbornness but also if the heavy coat would be a problem.

I had a mutt that was super smart and determined to get out and explore. She'd get to the "beeping" zone and lay down til the battery drained and beeping stopped then dig a bit and bolt. Had to go to a physical hot wire along the picket fence to finally stop it.

I just looked up halo for the first time and, surprise, it requires a$10/month subscription. After paying $470 for the collar.

The on going fee does suck but it does works great for us.

They make an invisible fence that uses radio instead of wires. You just dial up the distance you want and train the dog to it. No wires needed.

We are on 10 acres and our underground fence works great.
Paid the yard guy to trench the property.
Dogs won't go near the fence line with or without collars on
Sport dog customer service has always been awesome

The gps collars seem like a great option but I've got no experience with them

Electric fence is a lot easier. Once the dog hits it a few times you can turn it off.

We have a smooth coat and a rough coat border border collie that we use Halo collars on both. Works great. Smart dogs will eventually learn the boundary. A snug collar with the longer prongs worked for the rough coat for the first few weeks until the dog stopped testing the boundary as much. Then sound and vibration does the trick.

While there is the monthly charge it would do exactly what you are wanting. Works well under tree cover also.

There's no monthly plan required to geofence. They offer a plan to track the collar though.

We had the wireless pet safe one from petsmart for our 3 dogs. It worked great except 1 dog tested it to find weak spots. Our yard slopped off on one side and the signal did not do well on the down slope so he would just go through. I then installed the below wired system it works great for the same 2 dogs but no matter what I set collar or fence to my coonhound lab mix just takes off full speed past the wire, after a rabbit or something he wants to hunt.
He now has a 30'x30' 6' tall fenced area he gets to hang out in when not inside house. Because I am tired of getting him out of culverts or armadillo holes by his tail.

I have my two vizslas on a ~3 acre lot with Halo, no fencing. My ***** was heavily trained with audible collars prior to getting this property and bottom line she had zero issues escaping perimeter when we put her on a halo (version 5). My younger male took maybe a month but he is absolutely fine now. I have zero issues with the these dogs staying on property even though they have extremely heavy drive towards game and we have animals (deer, rabbit, squirrel, possum,coons) roaming through the property all the time.
