OK all you game biologist/ meteorologist types on the OB. Will a guzzler work in South Texss? At Webb county ranch, my shallowest water well is 20-30' deep with very low but consistent output from solar diaphragm pump producing 1-1 1/2 gom, enough to keep a 700 gallon trough full. Deepest well for livestock and wildlife is 110' and produces about the same with the same equipment. I also have frac reservoirs supplied by 3500' deep Edwards wells for frac purposes but wildlife have access.
Zapata county is much different. All we have there is county water, rainfall, and one pasture can pump out of Rio Grande.
So I was thinking that a guzzler might work down there. Anybody tried one other than in west Texas?

We use them to capture rainwater in Central Texas just north of San Antonio (Bergheim area). We capture rainwater to a 275 gallon tote and supply it to a water trough with a float valve. Pics and descriptions of our setup are on this thread:

It'll work so long as wet stuff falls from the sky, your holding tank is big enough, the trough is small enough (and ideally shaded) and you don't have cattle and hogs drinking from it.

Yeah, for south Texas, I would go larger on your catchment area and if you have hogs, I would fence it off so they can't get to it. We have goat panel fence on all sides and two houses with wells on the property so no hogs on the property and we can run water to it in drums if we don't get enough rain. As was said, use a smaller water pan in the shade to minimize evaporation. Ours is aimed at least partly at birds, so we used a larger tub in the open area. That way we could have deep parts for livestock and shallow parts of the water for birds. If you fence out livestock and hogs, you won't have problems with them screwing up the shallow pan as much.
