I'm wondering if anyone on here has experience with Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) with their dog.

Most of what I've read says it's more with puppies to around 3 years old… but my dog is nearly 8 years old.

I'm not really worried, as it subsides after 5-10 minutes of rest. Just wondering how prevalent it is and curious oof anyone has experienced it with their working/hunting dogs.

My second Lab(purchased around 2003-5) had it. She was at training when it showed itself and my trainer was really distraught about it. She lived at the house from then on, hunting only occasionally upland and very light training/chasing bumpers. We sent a blood sample to Auburn to test who then sent it to U of MN for testing and verification. It was very new to all of us back then. Sucked.

YOU MUST keep the dog from training or hunting near water. If it happens while the dog is swimming, that turns really bad really quick.

Other than that, Lucy was a good house dog that eventually got a brain tumor and we put down at age 11 or so.

ETA: Sorry for your pup!

Thanks for the feedback. He's never been a hunting dog… and I inherited him when the lady that bought him wasn't responsible enough to keep him. She didn't have a clue about dogs and overpaid some breeder in Georgia.

So I don't really know anything about his family history

He basically just lives to chase the tennis ball and will do it for hours if you let him. But now I just limit the time I throw with him… but it seems to happen after 7-8 minutes of throwing… so I manage it accordingly.

It was disturbing at first when it happened…they look like a drunk person stumbling and running into walls… then back legs collapse…. But legs have met collapsed hardly anymore since I manage him different.

But he is now a good companion and we will just rest him more going forward… be the good Lord never intended this one to be a bird dog ;-) hahaha!

Doesn't sound like you would, but you need to make sure the dog is unable to breed as well, since EIC is genetic. Glad they found a good home in yours!

Any idea who the breeder is? There are a lot of English Cockers and Pointers bred in GA, especially in South/Middle GA.

He's fixed. And no idea who the breeder is

It wasn't possible to find that out
