They are being taken to a farm to live out the rest of their lives???

I don't believe that.

I suspect "the rest of their lives" to be kind of short.

Like when, back in Army Airborne school, a soldier asked, "If my main chute fails to open, how long do I have to pull my reserve?

"The rest of your life, airborne, the rest of your life."

Old enough to remember the times when Katy was a farm community and geese were the problem. Miss those times for so many reasons. Damn I miss those times.

Maybe they sell them to Independence Ranch and they can release them one per day for their hunters.

Translocate them to Iran.

They're "relocating" them to a giant pit dug in the ground to avoid any local Karen's crying about inhumane treatment.

Unless they can sell them to a local butcher or restaurant who can market "wild game"

It does beg the question on how to dispose of hundreds of animal carcasses. A problem we saw when Mad-Cow breakouts happened overseas.

Speaking of hogs, yesterday, I filled a 5g bucket half way with corn, 2L of strawberry soda, a packet of strawberry jell-o, a packet of yeast, and some water. After it sits in the sun for a few days, I'm going to bury the fermented sour slop in my "figure 6" style corral trap this weekend. This is what AI told me to do. Hope I'm doing it right.

I was going to prop the trap open for a week then re-bait it and arm it next week assuming the hogs get comfortable going in there and eating the slop, but I might just go ahead and arm it right away this weekend. Those damn things are destructive.

Consider digging a post hole 2-3 feet deep to pour the slop in. It'll take them much longer to get the last kernel of corn, which will attract the maximum number of hogs to your trap, but you'll have a good sized hole rooted out.

I could go grab a manual clam shell post hole digger, but the trap is built, can't get an auger in there.

Do you think I need to leave it open and just feed the hogs for a while to precondition them to the trap or can I just arm it now and assume the pungent smell of the slop will get big numbers of the sounder in there right away?

it tells me to condition the hogs for a week or two first, but I'm impatient and was hoping to hear what I want to hear from the OB.

I call BS on the farm...What land owner on earth, would willing take these pigs?

Funny story: My neighborhood had a hog issue several years ago (N.Austin area). The HOA hired a group to come trap/dispose of the hogs...but the bleeding hearts threw a massive fit; vehemently against killing the animals.

The common phrase was 'we're encroaching on their land, they aren't encroaching on ours!!'. They had zero concept of these being non-native, or how destructive the overgrown rodents are.

The trapping company said they couldn't find anyone willing to accept the hogs onto their land, and refused to help if the hogs weren't put down.

Finally, the residents allowed the hogs to be trapped, have them processed, and donate the meat to homeless shelters and food banks. That made everyone happy. It always made me chuckle that they were against death if it helped their own neighborhood, but were ok with it helping homeless. Death is Death....nothing changed from the animal's perspective...but it made the residents feel better about it.

yeah, I'll stop derailing this thread about Katy's problem. Sorry.

There is about a 100% chance I'll post something somewhere if I catch some hogs.

I wouldn't go to the expense of renting an auger. If you can't borrow a post hole digger, use a "sharp shooter" shovel, and dig it as deep as possible. The purpose is to prevent just a couple of hogs from eating all of your bait in a short time, allowing the maximum number to enter the trap before you spring it. You can repeat it a time or two before moving it. Hogs will become wise to it. If your gate is self closing, this is the ideal setup.

Yeahhhhhh, can verify. That, "going to a food bank" or "donating to the homeless" is MAYbe 1-2% of it, the rest will end up in a hole.

This. I moved into this house in January of 2020. Hogs were tearing up everyone's yard around me. I started shooting them. Shot a lot. A LOT! Haven't seen a hog in three years now. Simple.

I live in NW Wyoming and you might think this issue doesn't affect this area, and it doesn't now, but it could eventually. Alberta's being overrun with feral hogs and there's concern they could make it to Montana any year now. Finally this past December the Canadien government made shooting and trapping them legal.

Grizzlies have outgrown their habitat in the greater Yellowstone region and sightings of them in Cody and even to the east have started to become common. And yet no progress that we can see on delisting them. I can only imagine the impact of an infinite supply of fresh pork would have on their population.
