I have some pecan logs that I am going to mill into lumber. The trees were on a ranch here and they died back in the freeze of 21. We cut them down spring of 24. I can understand the science behind the vertical splits running the length of the log but what about the 90 degree horizontal slits between them? Never seen anything like that and am wondering why it happened. Any input? Anybody?

It signifies this tree's desire to be turned into chunks for smoking.

Could just be from the wood drying in uneven depths, just splitting as it swells and contracts, abusing the fissures ?

Post pics when you cut it. Interested to see the spalting in the lumber
