The North Rim is less visited, but that makes it even more worth the trip. The day I went there were maybe 30 total cars there, I had the trails to myself, and the views were amazing. Huge loss, but I'm sure it will get rebuilt

Just saw that. Stayed there with the family a dozen years ago, in the cabins. Would love to go back, so I hope that it's rebuilt in some similar fashion.

In addition to being less crowded, it's also cooler. Cabins didn't have or need AC.

That is unfortunate. Beautiful area and drive.

Yeah the drive in is like 20 plus miles of really isolated forest. I went end of Oct (snow on the trails but not in the canyon), and was afraid I could, get stuck if a storm hit.
Some great pictures of the lodge here.

I've been. Sitting on the veranda drinking a Manhattan watching the sunset with less than 30 people was an amazing evening.

The views compared to the South Rim are so much better.

Damn. The base it once 15 years ago and had it in my list to go back and stay at. You can prop your feet up in the rim there. Big loss

We stayed in a cabin there several years ago. Such a beautiful place. I too hope they rebuild it.

What a shame. We stayed in one of their little cabins for several days with our kids 5 years ago. Watched a big lightning storm from their dining room 's huge windows one night during dinner. Beautiful place.

Was supposed to stay at north lodge Friday, then hike down to Phantom Ranch Saturday, and hike out South Kaibab yesterday.

We (group of four guys) had to change plans Thursday evening/fri morning and ended up hiking south rim /havasupai on Friday. We hiked South Kaibab Sat morn to Phantom. At 4pm they told us we had to evacuate because of potential chlorine gas concerns. We were dreading the hike back up South Kaibab without a nights rest and worried about some of the other hikers less prepared than us... They ended up evacuating all the hikers, workers, and construction workers on new water treatment plant at the river via helicopter. Can't say enough about how professional and organized the park staff and air crews were through the whole event. Pretty unique to get airlifted out of the lower canyon via helicopter with no medical emergency taking place.

The chlorine tanks later were breached by the fire sometime Saturday evening. It's a shame but understandable that the Kaibab trails will be closed for an indeterminate time into the future.

About four or five years ago we were at the lodge after the sun went down and watched a thunderstorm from the back porch. The storm passed just to the west of us, and then went out over the canyon. Watching the Grand Canyon being lit up by lightning at night is a sight you won't soon forget.
