Bbq grill - cast iron grates or stainless steel grates

About to buy a Weber gas grill.

What is better? porcelain-enameled cast iron grates or stainless steel grates

assume cast iron will have better sear but stainless will be easier to maintain/clean? Other than that?

I definitely prefer the stainless steel. My experience with the others is they deteriorate and break apart

I've had my Weber since 2008. Cast iron grates...still haven't had to replace them.

Father in law has SS ones. They're ok but don't grill as nicely

For sure stainless steel and it's not close. The sear on a Weber is all about the coals and flame anyway. The porcelain crap will eventually break apart and fall off.

You can get non coated cast iron grates off amazon to fit damn near any grill, and i'm sure other places. I prefer them to the stainless, and much preferred to the coated cast iron. If those are only two options, go for stainless, and then replace with cast iron when needed.

Personal experience, I recently switched from a Pitt Boss to a Grilla Silverback. Pitt Boss had some kind of coated diamond grates but idk what exactly. Silverback has straight stainless. Pitt boss got a better sear and it ain't really been close. I'll eventually look into some type of sear grates.

Get the cheapest and then get a set of "grill grates". Using them for years. Less flareups.
Saw trager is using them now as an up grade called "sear grates".

That's what I came on to say! I love my grill grates! Get the perfect sear marks and almost no maintenance!
