Sure hope they handle this properly, I don't have enough deer to lose them to NWS.

Press release
TexAgs: as long as we have each other, we will never run out of problems.

Agree! There is another thread with a guy or two with what seems like pretty good insight posting on it.

I'd hate to have our recovering deer population in N Uvalde County, that is rebounding from a god awful 5-7 years, be decimated by screw worms. Allegedly that was why the deer population was almost nonexistent in our area back in the 50-60s.

King Ranch hosted a NWS workshop in Kingsville yesterday. The venue was maxed out with 250 attendees. The plan is for the lead organizations to host future workshops/training sessions moving forward.

The consensus is that their arrival isn't a matter of if, but when.

Are there any recommendations for prophylaxis in cattle? I've looked on line and haven't seen any. Thanks

Other than releasing sterile flies, I read that ivermectin should be able to kill the larvae once the host is infected.

My dad tell stories of riding up on tanks/ponds and there being 10-15 deer standing in the water with only their head showing attempting to drown the worms. Dozens of dead deer laid out in every direction that were unsuccessful.

There simply aren't enough day-working cowboys left to handle a full blown infestation. Nasty stuff.

Wow, horrible story. That would be the end of the deer in our place in Runnels county.

Occasionally I'll get to visit with esteemed outdoor photographer David Langford. Now in his early 80s, he recently said that when he was a boy, his uncles and cousins returned from WWII and during deer season, would hunt the family ranch in Comfort.

He recalls that it would be a prolonged, whiskey-fueled discussion among the men around the campfire if one of them reported SEEING A DEER during a hunt.

For deer/cattle there has been some discussion about getting ivermectin added to deer/cow feed.

You can get the dewormer feed right now but it's not Ivermectin. I can't remember what it is though… seems like it sure would be a good idea to get this feed developed.

You'd have to start looking at subsidizing the cost for deer protein and make sure that almost all used it.
