Random people trying to buy my camper?

We have lived in North Texas for 2 years now. Literally since the month we moved in, I have had people somewhat frequently knocking on my door or pulling into my drive asking to buy my camper. It is stored towards the back of my property, down by a barn. When we first moved in it was more visible, but now it is tucked between a barn and shed down a hill, and you would really have to look for it from the culdesac, or pull way down the driveway, and still it's not super visible.

The door knockers have always been Hispanics driving newer trucks. At first, it was the same guy would come by every 2 months and ask if it was for sale. Today, another guy rolled up in a brand new Silverado, drove straight down my long driveway (not rolling in the culdesac looking at all the neighbors, he knew exactly what house he was coming to). He hopped out wearing a white shirt with an unbuttoned polo and a big gold chain. I answered the door, and he said someone told him that there was a camper for sale at this house. He must have immediately read my demeanor, as he started back peddling and saying maybe he had the wrong street. I told him it was not for sale, and he politely left.

They have always been polite, never pushy. But come by regularly, which is what I find odd.

Is there a scam I am unaware of? Like Gypsy roofers or something? Or are they trying to find old cheap campers for some nefarious reason I'm unaware of. Or is there just such a large market for campers here, that guys cruise neighborhoods hoping to find a deal randomly. Seems like cold knocking on people's doors would be a rough way to make a living, but maybe I just don't know. It's really only this 1 guy, and then now another two that I suspect are connected to the first.

Our camper does not look nice on the outside. It's 20 years old, and looks it. The inside is totally remodeled, but you wouldn't know that from the street. It's not worth a lot. So; I'm just wondering what is going on? Any OB help is appreciated.

I do have one. I built a fence (black chain link) and have a driveway gate, but it's parallel with the front face of the house, which is where our fences must terminate.

I suspect that there's a large market for RV's in Mexico and these guys are trying to export them. I'd keep a camera pointed at it. Not saying they are up to no good but that's pretty suspicious.

My grandfather had his motorhome stolen out of a storage yard a few years ago, they also took the one next to it. Both were early 2000's models on ford chassis. The thieves somehow had to know the gate code, and where these two specific rv's were stored when they took them as they were under covered parking far off the road surrounded by hundreds of other RV's. Honestly worked out in our favor as his was very rough and we were trying to convince him to sell it since he was 80YO at the time. insurance paid out double what it was worth so it was a super easy sale lol. I figure it's either in Mexico or parked on a street in Los Angeles housing a vagrant somewhere.

That's kind of what I'm thinking, something like that maybe. Just wondering if anyone knows anything or has seen similar.

The camper is pretty secure. It's backed into a tiny hole that requires some pretty particular maneuvering around a tree to get to. It's an PIA to park there, but it stays pretty out of sight and out of our way, so it's worth it to me. I keep a lock on the tongue- which I know could probably be defeated with a sledge, but it's something. I also have a solar WiFi cameras on the front drive and garage, so there is absolutely no way someone could get back there without tripping them. It would be SUPER inconvenient to steal, but not impossible. Just trying not to make it a soft target. But if it got stolen, I would just file insurance and move on with life.

My house is next door to an empty lot. The owner of said empty lot has parked his camper and a buddies camper on the empty lot (I love to look at them). Just as you are mentioning, people are constantly coming by and leaving cards in my mailbox inquiring about the campers. Not sure what the racket is either but you are not the only one.

When I had mine parked beside the house would get the same thing. At least 3 times a week. I decided it was folks looking for a mobile meth lab and stopped answering the door.

FIL was jeeping his boat in my BILs driveway for a few months. He kept getting random unsolicited offers to buy it from folks driving up.

Did you piss someone off who is telling everyone that your camper is for sale?

In my line of work, this is entirely possible!

THIS is what I picture in my mind happening to my camper.

I suppose I should start with "How much?"

For sure. It's not a motor coach, so nothing to test drive really. No way they get a "test pull", ha ha!

There are many that buy a boat or RV, use it a time or two, then it sits in the driveway or backyard and never moves. The owner might think about selling it, but never gets around to doing so. However, if someone shows up at their door wanting to buy, they are happy to get rid of it.

Old roommate of mine got a jet boat that way.

Walk around your trailer and make sure none of your buddies jokingly put a "for sale" in one of the windows

Is it visible in satellite imagery? I wouldn't be surprised if the game has advanced into the 21st century and these guys are trying to scoop up stashed away units that appear to be seldom-used.

For the record, had the same thing happen years ago when I had a '94 model truck parked in front of my house. I can't remember the magic number of years where they can import to Mexico tax-free but the flyers and doorbell ringers started within days of it hitting that milestone.

Could be a fb scam. Several times my wife would find a "moving sale" listed on FB, and when you drive by, yes they have the item listed, but don't plan on selling. I think people find stuff, list it, try to get you to pay up front, all the while not owning said item.

We own a small RV park and I get two or three calls a month asking if I know of any of the tenants who want to sell their RV. I have always suspected they are trying to buy at a very low price, do a small amount of updating and then resell them.

They're just out hustling for a good deal they can flip. Same thing with desirable models of boats, trucks. etc that they might be able to get cheap and turn and sell pretty easy.

Friend of mine had a single cab late 80's Tacoma in his driveway. Sat for years. He lives on a busy street so lots of people just passing by would see it. People would leave notes trying to buy it all the time. He wasn't trying to sell it, but would tell people that asked he'd take $5k for it. Most people were looking for a steal of a deal and would pass. It was definitely on the high end, but it's what he wanted if he was gonna part with it. Eventually he got his asking price.
