There was an unsettling number of people there. Triple parked along the beach. Do not recommend.

Traffic in corpus was backed up past flour bluff to get on the island Saturday. Just two weeks ago I was thinking about looking at houses on the island. Weekends like this are quick to remind me why I don't live out there.

lol. Yeah. About right. About 12 years ago my brother and drove from the North side Houston to Galveston Island to kayak fish off the west end at one of the pocket parks on Memorial Day. We got to the beach well before sunrise and all there was were some of the other kayakers we were meeting to fish with. We launched at sunrise and fished until noon, hit the beach for lunch and a couple of beers, chilled a while and rolled out at 2pm, and by then the place was absolutely packed.

The INSANE part was that on the way back from 51st street all the way to beltway 8 in Houston off I-45 was solid traffic that wasn't moving headed TO the island…-at 3:30 pm on Memorial Day.

Most of them probably never got there.

Headed to Matagorda in the morning. Right as everyone else is leaving.

Weekend in Port Aransas. Got there Thursday and traffic wasn't bad. Fished Friday. Lots of boats. Beach was crazy Saturday and Sunday. Pulled out this morning by 8:00 and missed most of the outgoing traffic but still a lot. Didn't get really stupid until we got North of San Antonio. Pulling a 5th wheel trailer and white knuckling most of the way.

Yeah I learned this time that it is better to avoid the weekend before Memorial Day. Probably better to travel on Sunday and spend Mon-Wed at the beach. Everyone is leaving on Monday.

I was in the Port Aransas area. On Sunday around 2 pm I almost got boxed in at the beach due to the number of cars. People are such idiots. On the way home I nearly got into a wreck several times. Seems like all the idiots are driving on Memorial Day.

Yep it was a zoo. Had the typical Memorial Day morons on the water too. Several boats buzzing his at 50 yards and Jet Skiers doing whatever the hell they pleased. We left early this morning and had zero traffic though.

went to Surfside Sunday. go there at 9:30. a bit of line getting on the beach. then a fairly long driver to find a spot to park and setup.

we left at 2:45. we exited the first beach access we could. there was a line of cars from that access point all the way to FM 523. That's 5 miles.

Kids had a blast though.

I have no desire to go to any beach or lake on Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day.

Yep, plenty of other days with far fewer people. Unless you like dealing with bigger crowds and way more traffic, then those are the days for you!

Reminds me of the conversation I had with my oldest daughter this weekend. She's trying to follow my negative mother's footsteps and we're doing everything possible to help her avoid growing up to be a miserable person.

You can sit at home doing nothing and ***** about how bad having fun might be.

or

You can live your life actually doing things, having fun, and dealing with the downside just like any other day.

We went down to a friends house on Bolivar for the long weekend. It was crowded. We adjusted our times on the beach accordingly, and did other fun stuff during the middle of the day. Made great memories with the kids while everyone else told themselves how much better it was to do the same old crap at home this weekend.

When I lived in Surfside we would try to be out of town on weekends like Memorial Day, or at least just stay home.
But we had the advantage of being able to access the beach anytime...I always struggle with how much I hate the crowds of people and not letting others dictate how I spend my free time

Way back in the day in Surfside there was a one stop shop named Beach, Bait & Tackle. It was where Pier 39 (or whatever the number is) today just before the bridge over the canal.

I was a wee lad of 16 and had a summer job there. That was also about the time that Galveston started putting the pinch on alcohol on the beaches, so the lovely residents of the greater Houston metroplex descended on Surfside. I can only describe it in terms of a plague of locusts. Traffic would often back up all the way to new 288 north of Lake Jackson, sometimes halfway or so to Angleton. CR 220 was the farthest north I ever saw it, and that is about 17-18 miles north of the bridge.

As a relatively sheltered suburban/small town kid, it was an eye opening experience when the sun went down. I saw things that cannot be unseen and things that even the local off duty LEO that was hired to help with crowd control wouldn't even bother with because he knew he was outnumbered and outgunned. I believe it was the next summer that was the last time that store was open on a major summer holiday. At one point the owner had to lock the doors to the store and pull out a couple of 9mm pistols to prevent blatant theft. After that they would just shutter everything like a hurricane was coming in because it was far cheaper to close down than it was to go through the theft, vandalism and general nightmare of being open.

We don't even think of messing with the beach down here on holidays. I advise anybody else to do the same.

I am thankful I live close enough to the beach that I don't have to go on holidays. Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are miserable times to be there. Weekday evenings and Friday mornings are the best!

I remember those days. My Grandparents had place over on Bolivar. It was dead boring, and then they closed down drinking on the beach in Galveston, and everything went crazy including the lines to get on the ferry. Thats when my dad got a place in Sargent, which had no problem with drinking but also didnt have a beach.

Matagorda was a ghost town today. Lots of sargassam though.

Nice afternoon for a backwater mud stomp too. Been doing it for years and might occasionally see some old boot prints.

Pro tip:
There are more options for a fun holiday weekend than:

A: Go to a crowded AF public beach/lake
or
B: Stay home, do nothing and b*%$*

I know you have posted that link before, but would you please post it again? I don't think we're going to be able to swing June but I do want to have it on file.

I didn't even measure before stringing. Catch enough of them and you know when you set the hook. But, I went to clean them and figured I better measure for the junior game wardens. 23.5" and 24.5". I won't even keep them much bigger.

Howdy, if you live in Rockport, you NEVER wanna got to Port A on a holiday weekend or the Summer. The ferry wait can be one hour plus! It is almost impossible to get across, sat there one too many times, not again!
