What suggestions do you have on a quiet, small caliber gun to use around the house to shoot armadillos, snakes, etc? I assume a 22 with rat shot would be the common suggestion but open for suggestions on models or alternatives.

Just moved to a more rural area and currently have an armadillo issue and have seen a few snakes. Actually not planning on shooting these as I relocated the snakes and will try to do so with the armadillo, however, I am sure the time will come that I need to use a gun and I do have neighbors that I would rather not startle too much. All of my guns are high powered or not very practical for this type of shooting. Nothing fancy, something I can get at Academy or similar and suggested ammo. Thanks.

An Armadillo is going to laugh at rat shot.

Ruger 10/22 that you can put a silencer on if noise is an issue for you. I'm always a fan of being discreet about these things in case there is a neighbor or family member that cares too much.

Hopefully, we won't be jumping through the same hoops for silencers soon.

You can find sub-sonic ammo for a .22lr online and somtimes on the shelf at Academy. If you can't find sub-sonic, don't over think it. You'll be ok without it.

My skunk works gun. Literally for neighborhood skunks so the dogs don't get sprayed.

I've seen 22 bullets ricochet off many things and become a hazard. Can easily ricochet off rocks, wood, water, etc. Had a good friends high school aged kid fishing in my pond one afternoon and he shot numerous times with a 22 at a snake swimming on top of the water. Several bullets hit my office building 150 yards away while I was there.

.410 shotgun with 4 lead shot is my home varmint killer. Not worried about what the neighbors think and don't have to worry about wounding something

How far are the neighbors?

For safety, first would be a 410. Second would be a 17 mach2.

For noise, suppressed 22 with subsonic ammo. Or even unsuppressed with subsonics or CB longs.

FYI CCI standard velocity are subsonic in my browning buckmark if I put them in a rifle they are not. These are the best pricing and highest velocity to still be subsonic if you know you are using them in a pistol. I don't like the subsonic as they are typically 2 or 300 fps slower and more expensive.

I have one of those snake shot 410s and it sucks. Damn thing kicks like a mule.

I have a bolt action Mossberg .410 from the 60s that I would use. I think its called a model 193. It has a 22 inch barrel, is soft shooting and not particularly loud.

.22lr can kill a long way away.

9mm Flobert shotgun is the answer you seek. I used to shoot mine in the attic and it never caused any damage. Was originally purposed for rats, snakes, rabbits around barnes/gardens. Ammo is not very expensive and readily available online. I have a 1930s Winchester bolt action that I paid about $300 for.

Go to Gun Broker or Guns Iternational and find a Savage Model 24 in a .22 LR over .410. Most versatile around the ranch gun I have. You have the best of both worlds at your fingertips.

Easy answer here, 458 socom, pistol and suppressed. Armadillo's are armored.

Don't screw this up for the rest of us…you need a snake gun, an armadillo gun, a raccoon gun, a skunk gun, a deer gun, a hog gun, a truck gun, a boat gun, a shop gun, an upstairs gun, a downstairs gun, a nightstand gun, a SBR PDW, a travel gun, and ofc an EDC…and then you need each of those again setup for night time.
