One of my mature live oaks never really "recovered" after spring leaf drop. All the trees around it looked the same during the pollen times, but this one just stayed thin. Almost like the tree got stuck in between seasons, and didn't have the juice to put on full new leaf growth. All of the leaves on this thinner tree are smaller (as compared to the oaks around it), with less overall foliage in the canopy. I don't see any signs of wilt on dropped leaves. The few browning leaves that I'v picked don't show the brown veins of wilt.

Anyone have an oak tree that did this? What was your experience? I know the back and forth between drought and ice storms has been tough on younger oaks, but this is a well established mature oak. 20" diameter trunk.

Considering giving it a long deep watering with a hose placed under the canopy. Let it soak for a few days.

Thoughts?

Not really relevant to your situation but all of the live oaks in the neighborhood (and our yard) went through the spring leaf drop and flowering back in March/April.

Fast forward to now and they are dropping leaves like crazy. Drought and heat, I guess.

Yeah drought is def a concern. I laid some water down for a long slow soak. Guess I'll just watch it and see if there are any changes over the next few weeks.
