For those in Brozos county, this is shaping up to be the best dewberry production I have seen in 40+ years. The ripe ones now got that way before the gullywasher and aren't watered down. Pure flavor.

Took this picture of one of my go-to spots about a month ago. Sadly a couple of my spots got bulldozed to make a pad for a drilling rig. I'm going out tomorrow to to reconnoiter and maybe pick a few. Taking gran daughter out next weekend to pick a bunch hopefully.

When is the best time for production? Seeing lots of stems in lavaca and harris counties but not many berries.

Yep.

We had a farmhouse in north Smith county growing up. It had an old road connecting our new road. Along the pasture side was a fence and a ditch. All along that fence were berries. What a thorny jungle it was.

Granddaddy would take us down and pick berries. Funny how me and sister never had much berries at the end while GD had a full bucket.

Of course we had blue ink all over our hands and faces. Ate them like candy. But we still had cobbler.

Struck out with all my spots in Bee County. I blame the drought. I can find vines, just no fruit.

What area is this? We only have Chile Petins growing beside railroad tracks in my area.

My experience everywhere I have lived has been railroad tracks! No area in particular, that is just where I always found them.

I have tons of them on my property in the 3 acres I let grow out. They are pretty good this year after a mostly dismal year last year. Any kind of easement that might get cut back annually at most is best. Near anything with bird perches like a fence line, brush hedge, tree line, patch of woods, etc. A right of way for a road or pipeline or railroad or power line is ideal.

Thornless. Plant a couple, and they go everywhere.

Plus, they're huge.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Picked and ate some yesterday in Grimes county. They need a couple more days. Lots of red ones. Next week should be prime.

I miss my momma's dewberry cobbler. She used to have some of my cousins pick berries for her to make cobbler instead of their own mother (and their momma was a fantastic cook in her own right).

I live in the Texas panhandle now and we don't get dewberries here.

Man, this thread just took me back to a great time of my life! Some of my earliest memories at our family property were picking dewberries for my grandma. She'd cut the top off an empty milk jug, gave us all a wooden dowel to hold back vines, and drop us off on a fence line. We couldn't be done until we filled the jug up to the top of the handle. I always got bit by ants and cut by thorns; I know I complained at the time. Then we'd help mash them up, make jam and can them. Funny how life and time changes perspective…I'd give anything to do that with her now.

Thanks OP. This thread made my day.

Found a nice batch on a fence when I was checking water troughs friday, but the rattlesnake convinced me that I was through picking before I had enough for cobbler.

Good news... my two patches that I thought had succumbed to the bulldozer were both spared (so far). Bad news is they both are pretty barren this year. The patch in my photograph above looks like it will be perfect for next weekend, fingers crossed for nice weather.

Glad we finally got some this year. My daughter was starting to think cobbler wasn't real. I've been crying about it the last few seasons. When she finally had her first bite she said "Dad, now I know why you talk about dewberry cobbler so much"

Anyone got a cobbler recipe with the crumble stuff on top they'd like to share? I've never baked dessert before

Here is two. Top is my wife's family's, bottom is from my family. Obviously swap blueberries for blackberries. Both are 50-60 years old.

I've got a few acres of dewberries growing on my place. My daughter says they're her favorite fruit and she prefers them when they're halfway between red and purple. We go out every other afternoon to pick more fresh ones.

Posted this on the snake thread but she stepped on a copperhead while we were picking dewberries last week.

Side note - you can take a picture of an old family handwritten recipe that everyone loves, blow it up, and print it through CVS/Walgreens/Shutterfly. It makes a good Mother's Day gift or gift for the wife. I did that with a cookie recipe from my wife's great great grandmother.

Outside of Texas many people have never heard of dewberries. It's so odd to me.

I discovered marrionberries while on vacation in OR and they're really tasty! They grow wild too
Deerdude
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well people not from Texas are odd, so there's that.
