I'm almost done building a 200 yard range. 12' backdrop (double layer railroad ties, then back filled with about 50 yards of dirt). Will be bench shooting various loads. Mostly 300blk, a few 556, 6.5 Grendel, and maybe a 8.6blk and the sorts here and there. Some rimfire (22LR, 22mag and 17WSM).

Will have targets every 50 yards and will use AR500 in gongs of various sizes 4" on up to 12" (maybe a 2" and 3" for kicks).

I've bought from this guy for a few years:

https://shootingtargets7.com/

And used his gongs on t-post mounts on a larger range I have.

This shorter range though is more of an alley that is only about 20' wide and I need room to mow and maintain. I've had success with the t-posts but since they are static mounts, they don't swing (lack visual feedback). I'm thinking maybe a DIY conduit bar across some posts or should I go with a mounting stand that I could easily swap out 4x4's.

Any OB favorite mounting/hanging solutions?

I bought some of these and used some 1" 4ft conduit

I see these and like the concept, but haven't tried them.

Would like to hear some recommendations on options for shotgun hanging target backstops patterning different chokes / loads as well - different requirements than rifle requests

I hang my pistol steel with ar500 hooks on conduit. The hooks are nice when I want to set up and tear down but I send them flying with 12ga slugs or 7.62x51. Could be the hook design but I doubt it. For rifle silhouettes and gongs, I use two t posts and chain. I'm planning to use a angle grinder and cut off wheel to cut strips from a used tire so I don't have to keep fixing a shot up chain.

We hosted law enforcement and swat team training at our ranch in Texas. They would bring their own targets and equipment. Because they had to tear it down and set it up multiple times, they were pretty innovative on how they built their target/gong stands.
They used old auto wheels for bases and welded pipes straight up to the height they wanted and on the top of the pipes they welded a short piece of angle iron horizontal with the "V" down. (Like you would do if you were building a stand to hold pipe horizontally to slide and cut it) They would do pairs of these then lay a 4' or 6' 1" solid bar across them with the round bars sitting in the V of the angles.
They used pieces of 3/8 cable to hang the targets. They tac welded the same 1/4 angle iron to the front of the vertical cables with the V facing forward.
If they had a round hit the angle iron it would deflect the round into the backstop and not cut the cable.
The angle iron would be dented up but bullets didn't pierce it… guess cause the bullets were hitting at an angle.
They brought their same set ups year after year so I guess it held up well. It was quick and easy to set up, tear down and haul in their trailers.

Gunny - sounds great. Can you sketch what this would look like?

I can try. I'll do that, take a screen shot and send. Will be this evening.

Metal realtor sign frames work great.

What works better is all the 'bandit signs" that litter our neighborhood medians and intersections.

It's a win win. I clean them up and put holes thru em'...

I use old firehose and grade 8 bolts for hanging steel. Works great.

Very nice! Can you take a pic looking straight down so we can see your offset? I'm faced with a similar situation (narrow) that limits me a bit.

Looks like if you set up left of the house and aim between the trees and the pond you got another 100 yd of range to use.

Nice setup you have. Add this to my life goals list.

That's a carport and bunk house for the kiddos. The house is separate.

Mr McGibblets - you truly are a man who has excellent tastes, including the Texas flag. Is that an observation platform off the bunkhouse? Sheesh, it keeps getting better!

Observation deck for STX sunsets and also for skeet. Thank you for the kind words. Took a lot of work but it's my happy place. Always hate leaving it.

Thanks for the photos. My wife and I were inspired by the observation tower at the relatively new hotel "Stella" over by the Atlas development area (near 2818 and Traditions). Ever since we have wanted one. I'd rather have that and over looking beauty than a pool.

My trap club has a patterning board made of about 1/4" steel plate and they have an ammo can filled with axle grease mixed with white paint. Smear it on with a paint roller and you have a refreshable patterning board. #9 tss will lodge in the steel at 40yds though

I'm thinking you got a 500yd range right here. You know for getting ready for a western elk, mule deer, or pronghorn hunt.
Mr. McGibblets
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hahahaha well the end point is called the runway bc you can land a small plane on it. The 800yd shot on a raised platform is in the planning stages. 6ft high platform with gun rest and prone capabilities. At the end on the runway will be a big dirt pile with a steel gong at the end.

Mr McGibblets has inspired me. So I'm thinking of something like this at 100 yards and 200 yards. But it may be a bit much (too many). I will also have 50 yard and 150 yard targets that include rimfire plates.

These plates would be AR500 at 3/8" thick. As mentioned, I'll be running mostly 300blk (subs), a few 556 and 6.5 Grendel rounds and maybe an 8.6blk. I'll do some 22LR, 22Mag, and 17WSM.

Yes, I'm blowing an hour or so of time messing with it in Sketchup, but it will hopefully pay off with out having to change things up.

Any thoughts on the sizes?
