Howdy!
I'm taking a break from fly tying to give a short update on the winter snowpack and fishing outlook for SW Colorado.
Highlights-
*Low snowpack (66% of normal)
*Earlier than normal creek fishing season start
*San Juan River currently over 400 cfs and fishing great. SJR is NOT affected by runoff and will fish great all spring/ summer.
*Runoff on the Animas started a few days ago, around 1000 cfs and rising
This winter has been below average, the region is currently 67% of the rolling 30 year average. It's rare to hit the average, we are typically well below or above the 30 year mark. Snowpack is the first thing we measure then we look to rain. Was planning a big motorcycle ride today but we were woken up by a rainstorm this morning. Some forecasts have shown an above average monsoon season but that remains to be determined.
Creek season will come early this year! Runoff has already started and we should be able to start fishing the creeks in early June (maybe earlier). Hermosa Creek is my favorite place to take people into the High Country. Later in the summer we will start checking stream temperatures but with any normal monsoons, I would anticipate fishing through the end of July. The Feds did unfortunately turn off our Hermosa Creek flow rate gauge in early December because of funding concerns. This makes decision making during monsoon events harder when trying to see if the drainage might get blown out.
The San Juan River has been fishing great this Spring! My wife has recently had a couple of San Juan Slams (Nymph, streamer and dry fly).
Pike season is just beginning at the lakes. I've taken a few big fish at Vallecito in the past and look forward to catching a few soon!
I'll post a link to my Instagram so you can see where we've been fishing lately. Feel free to text, call or post any questions!
Thanks
