I know this has been discussed before.... I am building a 20x20 safe/storm room. 8" thick concrete walls. When we do this for clients, we usually use a steel door from our supplier that is just ok. It isn't FEMA rated, but I don't really care about that. The problem is it isn't the most secure as it is only really relying on a deadbolt. I saw some less expensive versions on Midway, but I don't think they are necessarily made for the 8" thick walls. And I am not going to spend Ft Knox money for one. I don't care if it is super glossy polished name brand. Just want something really secure and that will open from the inside as this doubles as a large storm shelter.

Not sure what your budget is, but these are so cool. Every door will be slightly different.

Brown Safe makes really good vault doors. I have one of their safes I've been really happy with that is much better built than 99% of the box store safes out there. Their safes and vault doors start out at 1/2" plate steel and go up from there.

I have an Old Glory safe. They make really high quality safes. You will not find a heavier, thicker, or better fire rating for the price than Old Glory. I would imagine the vault doors are equally as solid.

Read the fine print before you do so. 10g steel isn't slowing anyone down.

1/2" or better. Door and frame should be a beast.

I am trying to stay $5K or under if I can. Need it to be an inswing since it is a storm shelter. Don't have to have it look super pretty. In fact, that just draws attention.

I know a few that have gone this route. They are made to order.
Call and ask for Domenic and see what kind of discount you get.

Picture above in link shows an Outswing door. It's an in swing. There are ways to conceal the presence of a vault.

I used Rhino Vault out of Dallas for a Customer and they were great. W installed 2 of the ballistic automated pocket doors and one vault with a hidden door. Great folks to work with and reasonable.

Pics were during construction, but an awesome gun/safe room.

Yessir. The drawers are custom with inserts that hold ARs about 8 per drawer.

Mind sharing the specs of the project? 8" walls and 6" ceiling? what hinges on the Murphy door. we did one for a client a while back and it was find at first, but didn't work as well as I like in terms of overall quality.

This will be a finished out room. I want a nice door, just not super expensive. Budgeted 5K, but am struggling with finding that in quality for a pour in place frame.

I went with Sturdy Safe, at the time they were about 1/2 the price of most competitors.

If the walls are 8" thick and most secure door frames are 6" thick. It should allow for a false door / panel in front so the secure door isn't seen. Most I've seen anchor directly to the CMU wall, but I've seen others where you can add metal braces anchored into the CMU when you fill them so you can weld to that for extra connection stability.

Talked with Domenick. He recommended the Ironman to get closer to our budget. Said it is almost as good as the Amsec, and there wasn't enough gain to justify the price difference.

I know a gentleman in Mason County that has a serious gunroom/vault etc, if I'm not mistaken he found an actual bank door. Don't know if there are too many of those floating around though.

There is a thickened slab at the vault and a ballistic shell with 2x6 wall around outside and 2x nailers inside with Fire Rock and Fire Insulation to finish it out. Has Fire dampers for the hvac system with return air as well. they shut off if fire happens. Humidity controlled and all security for house is controlled in there as well. Tile floor over concrete.

The vault arrived on trailer and we installed it on slab then built around it. He also just sells vault doors and has some amazing finished projects. Some Crazy Fancy and some made to look old, but all solid. He has literally installed vaults and doors from Asia to Middle East to Europe and all over the US.

This is one of the Pocket doors in the house.

I just built a safe room in my new shop. It's only 9'x9' by 8' tall. Stacked all the cinder blocks myself and poured them full of concrete. Formed the ceiling 5.5" and poured that also. I framed it for the browning safe door that looks like a regular door, but may be going with something cheaper. Have seen the snap safe that you can get for under 3k. Still a work in progress so I haven't looked too much.
