Anyone finding sheds yet?

A few have started falling in Johnson City

Biggest haul for me in 15 years of deer hunting

Very nice! Outside of the Stag antler I found 2 weeks ago, I got nada. Although our deer haven't dropped their antlers yet based on all of our cell cameras.

Normally our deer drop no later than the 15th of this month so any day now they'll start falling.

I found a lot of "sheds" while participating in a highway cleanup in New Braunfels last weekend. I was planning on cleaning them up and giving to the dog but my wife has vetoed that due to fear of broken teeth. What do you guys do with them?

"Decorate" the house with them

I let the dogs chew split elk antlers

They aren't brittle like bones, they kind of melt away as the dogs chew them. My pups love antlers as chew toys.

Always went back to our Webb Co lease around the end of March for the best results. I went earlier on some years, but quite a few bucks still hadn't dropped. Two years ago was my best haul. This was on March 26, 2023.

Starting to drop in Karnes County. Picked up two today while filling feeders.

Hoping to go shed hunting next week.

Where are the best places to look for them on the property, more on woodlibes or out in the middle of fields where the cattle graze? I know the few spots that the deer would hang out from some stalk hunts this past season, but have never gone shed hunting so looking for some good pointers.

Is there a rhyme or reason to this?

If a buck sheds an antler on March 4, why would it not still be there on July 4?

I walk fence lines and areas the deer will bed or feed. Most productive has been a little draw that water will run through when it storms a lot. It gives a little bit of protection from wind and generally has more food for deer so they tend to frequent it most.

Quite rewarding if you can find a matching set! If I find one then I'll probably go at least 50 yards around that spot to see if the second fell off nearby

They deteriorate fairly fast from sunlight/heat/rain. Plus they are a major food source for rodents.
They may still be their July 4 but they will have lost their looks and probably been eaten on and look nothing like when they were shed.

Sun will degrade them and rodents will end up chewing on them over time. A shed found now or in the next 30-60 days will look like the day it came off a buck vs being all sun bleached or eaten. Plus grass is shorter now than it will be soon

Because raccoons, skunks, and all other sorts of rodents like to gnaw on them for calcium and other nutrients. In addition, the sun bleaches then and they turn white. Not sure how quickly that happens and imagine how much direct sunlight plays a big role but a "fresh" shed is hard to beat.

Found these I'm my food plot yesterday in Blanco county. I like to go around and pick them up before the grass starts to grow because I don't want to find one with my tractor tire. I think these just came off. As all but one are from the same side I'm guessing I will find a few more next week.

Found one Saturday in Gillespie County.

Have bucks on camera that have dropped and some that still have the headgear. Also saw some live that still have antlers.
