A variant of the "what new thing did you get into in 2024" thread.

I am hoping the outdoor board can help others get in contact with folks who are SME's in subjects they want to learn about.

Not sure about new..... but I would really like to get back to fishing regularly. Ramped up significantly in 2020/21 and then 1 fishing buddy moved and the other is no longer a friend.

I am expecting to get a new aortic heart valve before the end of 2024 so:

Rehabbing my heart, losing weight, and getting fit will be high on my list for 2025. I plan to do that by walking but more excited to try rucking when I am ready. Also, I have read a book about barbell weight training for over 60, so I am looking forward to adding that to my routine. I will be 70 in a couple of years and have a lot of things left that I want to try.

I am a cartridge reloader, so there are two new calibers I am adding to my list including 6.5 Grendel and Creedmore. I started Crappie fishing a couple of years ago so I am trying to perfect making hand tied feather and hair jigs. I am also working on crappie location patterns for a couple of lakes in my area currently, but there are three more lakes that I would like to add to the list.

I have a farm that always needs work. Hoping to get the perimeter fences cleared of trees and brush and fences in good shape. I also planted pines and some small areas of hardwoods. It is time to trim up the hardwoods and thin.

All of this should keep me busy and out of trouble along with the normal yard, home, and vehicle maintenance.

I talk and think about it every year, but have never followed through... actually getting in better shape. I don't ever feel "overweight" but I know that I am, and I know I am not in good physical shape, even if the doctor hasn't told me that yet.

I want to get into a routine of healthier eating habits, working out consistently, and losing the 30-40 pounds I think I should lose. Having a kid a little over a year ago got me thinking about being the best version of myself so that I can be the best father for him. My first step was getting my Architectural license, which I did earlier this year; now its time to get in better shape.

I'm hoping that this will also help me in my competitive shooting, as I shoot several matches in the Texas terrain where being in better shape should help!

From your profile it seems you're in the DFW area. I'd highly recommend looking into F3. It's a free, peer-led men's workout. There's locations all over the country.

I had to find it.

"The Barbell Prescription" Strength Training for Life After 40.
by Jonathon Sullivan & Andy Baker.

I tried it for a few weeks last year and really liked the routine and how it was working, then I started having the heart problems and had to stop. Super simple routine using compound movements. Squats, Dead Lift, Presses, and Bench Press.

The book actually has plans for every decade starting at 40 and going up to over 70.

Don't really know how to PM. I am not a premium subscriber which I think is a requirement. Thanks for offering though. Not my first time, so I plan to drastically increase my activity and also reduce portion size some to accomplish my goals. It is hard for someone that has been married as long as me to request big changes in menu, so in my house, I just eat what the cook wants to prepare and be grateful.

Funny you should ask I brought the other thread up to my wife and we started talking about this. We have a daughter who will be graduating high school in a couple years and I thought would be a good discussion to do something together.

I brought up camping as a joke as I knew she would hate it. She actually said i would go turkey hunting with you before I would go camping. Woaahh, heh I can work with that so we may be going turkey hunting in the spring.

We then started talking about what else might be fun, marathon no, 5k's no, but we came up with maybe a good idea that may have some legs. We thought we would like more exercise, see more of texas, nature etc. Came up with idea of traveling somewhere mainly around texas, do a somewhat serious hike in the morning state park etc. and then hit up a local establishment brewery, winery etc in the afternoon. Explore small town texas.

I'd like to try 3 Gun Competitions, but I don't know where to start. I've tried looking at Google for places to practice, but the links don't work.

Showed himself for the immature ass that he is.
Short version.....
- I was coach for our son's soccer team for 4 years. They begged to be on my team (rec league with a draft) in year 4.
- His son was uncoachable because he was too worried about what mom thought.
- He & his wife didn't understand the sport. All they cared about was their kid scoring so they could post on FB.
- I started playing their son on defense because it was better suited to his skillsets.
- Dad (former friend) *****ed me out after a game. Claimed we weren't winning because I wasn't playing his kid on offense. Then stormed off before I could respond.
- He avoided me for the next several weeks while talking **** about me to other parents.

Edit to add..... this was for 7 year olds. he pulled this **** for F'n U7 soccer.

What 6.5 dies did you end up buying? I just found a set of Hornady LNL dies at Academy the other day in 6.5 Grendel. Excited to start honing in the sweet spot load for my 20" Faxon Match series barrel and the 18" heavy fluted Match barrel. Let me know if you find a long range load and I'll do the same.

In Montgomery northwest of Houston there is a Renaissance Gun Club that is private and literally designed for 3 gun shooting. I've done 3 gun tournaments there two years in a row with my military buddies for veteran charities and they are so much fun! Morgan Lutrell spent the whole day there last month at the most recent event.

Glad to share what I have done so far. I am just beginning to work on reloading the 6.5 Grendel so I dont have much data yet. My goals may not match yours, just for full disclosure. I have always tried to find loads that shoot accurately, are good for hunting loads, and are seldom the maximum published loads. At our farm, I only have a max 300 yard shooting range, so that is about as far as my ability to shoot ethically, so I have never even shot anywhere farther than that. I would like one day to try the truly long distance, but it is convenient for me to work up loads for a that hunting match.

I am also cheap, so my rifles are all on the budget side, with the 6.5 Grendel being my cheapest yet except for a Navy Arms single break action that I bought 40 years ago in .223 Rem to learn and start reloading. I found a cheap Anderson Manufacturing complete upper in the 6.5 that I use on a Remington AR15 that I already had. I might have $400 in the upper. Certainly not a top shelf long distance rifle. With that said, i can group 0.5" at 100 yds. and 3.0" at 300 yds with loads I have worked up so far. Good enough for hunting those distances.

To start, I bought a variety of Hornady ammo in the 123 g range and got pretty good performance from 3 kinds that would group 1.5" at around 2400 fps. Not bad. I have loaded the 123 SST with published loads and gotten 0.48" groups with H335 @ 2350 fps. HLever with 0.79" groups @ 2335 fps. Alliant R15 with 0.74" groups at 2119 fps. These are acceptable to me for hunting, but I am not completely confident in the Hornady SST for hunting purposes. I am concerned that they may fragment too much at closer distances but have not shot anything yet to see.

I am currently working on 120 g Speer gold dots. Very early and I have on tried starting loads, so I think they will perform better when I approach the higher loads with more velocity. Hoping this bullet would perform better for penetration and expansion, but will have to see on that. There are some Sierra cup and core bullets that may work too.

Forgot to answer your question. I started with RCBS reloading equipment, so that is all I have ever used, including the 6.5 Grendel dies. The Hornady dies you found should also be great, And I would not have any reservations using their equipment.

Hope that helps.

Enjoy one more good year of duck hunting Arkansas with my dad, uncle, and BIL. We go for a week every January to my uncle's farm. My dad's 79 and his health has taken a turn for the worse and not sure how many more years he will be able to physically do it.

Get a mature, migrating tarpon to eat a fly and at least get a good run and a jump or two. My buddy calls it "riding the lightning". Begin to learn how to fight the big ones. Have caught the babies, I need a big girl. 5 days in the keys in May are on the books so hopefully I'll get some good shots.

Finally plug in my welder and get good at it. Haven't welded in 15 years. I have never been formally taught, but self trained.

I guess I should work towards finishing my masters in Molecular Biology. Have 9 hours left but stopped when my son was born.

I hope to:

- take 3 more graduate classes in wildlife/biology (already taken 2), so I can adjunct teach later. I take classes for free at work (work at a university).
- have a garden this year. Did not have as much time this year.
- start my taco trailer.
- learn how to make more new types of food.
- actually go hunting.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Let's add another - I want to start hunting again. I grew up in Louisiana where I feel like it's a lot easier as there seems to be much more public land available to hunt on.

I'm just west of Fort Worth - where should I start looking? Is there any hope for anything other than getting on a lease?

Same. We paid off our house just in time for this meteoric inflation. So, even though we do have a little more money on hand, it doesn't feel like I thought it was going to.
