I am looking for a recommendation for a reasonably priced 12 gauge trap and sporting clays load. For pheasant I am using Prairie Storm 2 3/4", 1500 FPS, 1 1/4 oz., 4 and 5 shot loads. So to practice I am looking for something that may have similar velocity and shoot more or less the same, but not cost about $28/box.

Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks,

Whatever is cheap and patterns well out of your gun. Velocity doesn't make a noticeable difference when shooting clays and the 1 1/4 oz you are shooting would be illegal in every competition I have ever been in. Remember that in the Olympics those guys are shooting 24.5 grams which is more or less 7/8 oz.

I think you are over thinking it. I would just shoot a higher velocity target load, and there wont be any appreciable difference with the velocities. Find some faster target loads (1300ish FPS) and go to town.

Thanks, perhaps I am over thinking it, although I shot quite a bit better this season using 1500 FPS loads. The results may be due to other factors. Most shots were 25-30 yards with the longest ones being about 60. I understand the 200 to 300 FPS may not make a difference on the closer shots although it may on the 60 yarders.

I think you are probably overthinking. The velocity is not going to make a measurable difference. The things YOU do, mount, form, follow through make the biggest difference, and of course the 1 1/4 oz of shot isn't hurting your chances at all.
