I'm currently heading from Dallas to Wimberley. Passing through Austin around 6:00pm. I'm trying to decide between stopping and having an early dinner before Austin, and letting traffic die down, or pushing through to arrive in Wimberley around 715 and have dinner then.

Any advice on when traffic starts to get better in Austin, or the best route to take through Austin would be very much appreciated. My map is advising me to take the 130 Toll Rd. around. But I trust you guys more than Apple Maps, ha ha.
Thanks in advance for the advice, it is much appreciated.

Of course, I understand The absolute best option would be to never go within 100 miles of Austin. Sadly, I don't have much of choice, as this is for work.

Always, always take the toll road if it is an option. You will still sit on sections of 130 between 4 and 6:30, but it is a million times better than 35.

Oh, and ditch apple maps and use Google.

Drive inbound until it starts to slow down and then stop and get dinner. Good luck!

In a hurry? Take 130.

A little more relaxing drive would be to take 281 and come into Wimberley from Blanco.

I currently work in Pflugerville and stay in Georgetown during the week. I don't leave my jobsite until at least 6pm because anytime before that and 130 is pure garbage to drive on.

I assume Austin proper is worse.

281 Probably adds 45 minutes to the trip and traffic is just as bad in the burbs as it is in city proper (but you could stop at Bluebonnet for some pie).

Personally, I'd stick to 35 to 45 to mopac to 1826, stop at the salt lick for dinner, and then on in to Driftwood then Wimberly.

Just listen to a podcast and ignore the a-holes on the road.

Going south on 130 is usually get there fast. 281 would be an option for a scenic but slower trip

Do not get on i35 south of the 45 intersection. Construction has made it worse than normal traffic.

Exit @ Georgetown. Eat at Monument Cafe, then check Waze.

It's a great place to eat but they are not open for dinner anymore. Actually haven't been for quite some time.

Exit to 130 in Georgetown. Stop at Texan Cafe in Hutto for pie as good as Bluebonnet. Resume tollway only drive as fast as possible southwards after. Do not attempt I-35 at any point.

It pains me to say this, but traffic in Marble Falls has really gotten to be a deterrent to taking the 281 route.

sending someone to salt lick? wow, you really hate the OP huh? of all the bbq places in austin, salt lick is about a half a step above bill miller.

i always knew there was something wrong with you, just never could put my finger on it. now, i know.

Salt lick gets a lot of hate, but it's still a cool place to hang out and eat, especially if it's on your route already.

Skip Salt Lick and go to Hays City Store.

Austin local here although I don't claim it anymore and live out Dripping Springs these days but I've got a round about way for you. Stay clear from 35 or even 130. Honestly Mopac (Loop 1) is the better option. I can send you down a bunch of back roads out my way and although it may not be any faster, you will at least be moving the whole time.

Take 45 at 35 to loop 1 (Mopac), run Mopac all the way till it dead ends, technically it becomes 45 again but that's just garbage non-local talk. It dead ends into 1826. Take a left on 1826 till it dead ends into 150. Take a left on 150. When you come into downtown Driftwood (it's literally 1 building and a church) take a right onto Elder Hill Rd. That will take you over to RR 12, take a left on it and wala you're in Wimberley.

Haven't been there in awhile. Too many damn people. Enjoyed it when it was a little known spot way out from town. Good food though!

No sir I have not

I'm actually a lifelong Georgetown resident; we've gotten to where we don't go south of Sam Bass Road unless someone's life is on the line..

I'm commuting from Great Hills area to near the airport these days, about as far across Austin proper as you can get. Traffic may suck but it's all relative and still really not that bad.

If you do find an efficient road with good traffic flow in Austin, they'll just convert the traffic lanes into bike lanes to fix that issue.
