Monday we had a forecast for .7ft seas for the entire western gulf. Not uncommon for Sabine Pass but a rarity further down the coast. Decided to run the bay boat 60 miles out of Port O'connor to the old Falcon rig on the edge of the shelf.

Its one of the deepwater rigs that was able to be reefed in place to preserve habitat. Really a critical location due to the lack of other features along that portion of the shelf.

Primary target, jigging for Amberjack while the short season is still open. They gave us a bit of a fit in the structure, but we were able to get some up.

Scamp grouper. One of the best eating fish in the ocean. They hang out inside the rig structure so it's a risk going for them. But they tend to not fight hard and if you can get him up the first 20 feet, you've won the battle.

This rig used to hold a lot of blackfin when it was still active and lit up at night. We were happy to get the surprise of fresh sashimi.

Like a lot of fishing spots in Texas, it gets hit consistently hard. And the AJs are notorious for showing you who's boss. Got one sporting someone else's jewelry. Huge circle hook with approx 300lb leader broken off against the rig.

Overall, an awesome day to be out. A long run but we were able to cruise 35 each direction. I dont know what it is about offshore fishing. It's an itch that even when scratched seems to just come right back.

It was as flat and clear as I can remember in a long time. Could see my toes in chest deep water.

Nice haul! Wish I had the stones to run that far in my bay boat but tend to stay much closer in. I sure wish I had a book of these drawings with coordinates for the gulf outside packery channel lol

We run a 24' Shallow Sport Classic out of Port Mansfield on days that it's <2ft, chasing shrimp boats for tuna and hitting a few of the close in rigs for snapper. Average 6-10 trips a summer.

All the reefed rigs are on the tpwd site. Click on the gold star, then images, then view documents and images, then right click and save as, then youll be able to zoom in on each file to get the useful info.

My wife was a factory rep for Regulator Marine. They gave her a demo boat we could use. We used to keep a summer long rental in PA. Went offshore every week end we could.
One of the things I miss most now being in the Ozarks.

Good trip CS78. Thanks for sharing the escapade!
Tight lines!

How far do yall have to run?

In a 1.6ft sea, I can only make about 22-24mph. There was a time where that was ok because we only had to go 15 miles to catch a bunch of king, ling, and snapper. Now, it seems the kings and ling are non-existent, and the snapper are much further out. It has to be really calm for me to do the 40 mile runs where we were catching big snapper this June. And even those fish left with the hot water and haven't returned. We fished a bunch of rigs and reefs in 200-250ft of water Monday and they were completely dead. Trolled, jigged, bottom fished, not a fish. Ive heard all kinds of reasons for what might be causing it but I just dont see the bait balls like we used to. No bait=no fish.

What model did you like? Im itching bad to get a bigger boat, Mostly to be able to run in the 45-50mph range on 1-2s. Really like the regulator 26 with the narrow beam. But I know they are built like tanks and heavy on the trailer.

The closest rig for snapper is about 12 miles out of port, the next is about 4 miles further. We've got a few wrecks and rocks in that general area we work. First and second set of shrimp boats generally hold ling if the shrimpers aren't working them. To get to shrimp boats that hold tuna it's generally the third set about 50 miles out On the edge of the drop off. Once we get that far, we've also got some numbers past the ledge where we have had luck with Tile fish.

When she worked for them they only had the one model….. the 26'. It would outride anything in its class… hands down.
They now build a 25' with a 8'10" beam and next up is a 28' with 9'5" beam.
I ran a 26XO at a show and man was it nice. Think it had a 9' 3 beam…. Think it uses the old 26' hull.
They are extremely well built, ride great, really dry and smooth with that typical pronounced Carolina flare bow design.
Their mold work and attention to fit and finish is impeccable and 2nd no one. Joan and Owen Maxwell started the company and still are the sole owners and are hands on in the plant everyday.
They are fine people and truly treat every owner and customer as family.
They have a very close relationship with Yamaha.
They are working very closely with Yamaha and Yamahas hydrogen powered outboard prototype.
With all that said….. very expensive boats… but well worth it. I literally know of no manufacturer that builds comparable quality boats in their class imho.
If you ever get ready to pull the trigger on one let me know.
Yep o the weight. We had to buy a new F250 back in the day for my wife to pull her demo boat.
They used to build that 26' with an aluminum complete fold down flying bridge tower. It was really unique.

For me to justify one, it'll have to be an older hull that has either been reworked or needs it.

Im driving a 3/4 gas but living in College Station, need to be able to run pretty fast on I-10 heading to Louisiana. Also like the 8'6" beam of the old 26 so that it's the same width as the trailer and manageable in Houston traffic/ construction.

Her largest dealer was Negus Marine in Mobile Alabama. They sold a number of Regulator 26,s. Back when she worked for them Regulator was still a small company.
They sold quite a few in Florida and Alabama and Louisiana. They were popular in N. Carolina as well. (Cause they were built there).

Negus Marine is closed up now I think but I would search in that area for an older 26'.
If I hear of one I'll pass it on to you also.
