These heinous weeds are starting to spread around my place. Anyone have success managing them in the past? I don't want them to take over and know that is a legit possibility.

I am having the same problem. I bought a gallon of MSMA, and a sprayer with a boom for the Side x side. Going to spray the entire yard. I am absolutely fed up with these vile weeds.

I believe the spraying needs to be done in February and it needs to get rained in....not too much not too little.

I kept out about 85% of where it was showing up only to find new places I have never seen it before.

Now I use Map Gas torch on a few near the house.....very inefficient but satisfying.

I used a product called Amaze as pre-emergent. I spread the granules, with hand spreader, around Valentine's Day and again a little in late September. Definitely worked for me in my yard, which is adjacent to state easement that is full of grassburs.

I spray my pastures with a product called Rezilon. It is expensive but a little goes a long way. I have been using this now for a couple of years and no grass burrs. It is a preemergent and must be applied in Jan/Feb timeframe when the soil tempture hits 55 degrees. You can find you soil tempt. by going to greencast. com put in your zip code and it will give the tempt. each day. I will attach a link.

That stuff hates nitrogen. Fertilize now. Then a good preemergent in Decemeber and again about March/April.....then fertilize again early summer and late summer. Then hopefully by next year you will be in a much better spot.

Are you talking yard control, or pasture, or both?

A friend of ours had issues for years, tried several things with no luck. He then brought in some sheep, let them collect the burrs in the wool, sheared them and burned it. Cleaned up those pastures well.

If you are in the BCS area, go by Producers Coop. and talk with Dr. Bill Lazbe. He is a product expert in all things when it comes to herbicides. He will solve the grassburr problem. As I stated earlier Rezilon Herbicide will be the key to your problem. Expensive but it works when used properly.

That's brilliant.

They are all over our pastures in Fayette County. Hate them passionately.

Attended multiple classes/seminars on grassbur control, most concluded with "good luck, control is challenging, improve your pasture". And that the viable seed can lay around for 7-10 years.
Rezilon has been THE best product to come along, sure hope the generic arrives quickly, the chemical cost is now about $30/acre ( went up this year). Its 90 day-ish efficacy allows it to work through most of the spring, and if your budget allows, a late summer application can be insurance.
MSMA can be used on established grassburs, as usual, smaller the better, and setting back (yellowing) Bermuda grasses is not uncommon. And not rated for pasture use.

I do know of instances where Rezilon was used in extremely sandy soils, and heavy, repeated rains must have dissipated the product, little if any control resulted.

I have a relatively small area of heavily concentrated sandy soil which is exactly where these sticker burrs are spreading. I'd classify their growth as strong in that area, though they have spread to others parts of my land that does not have sandy soil.

Thanks for the info!

Another happy rezilon customer here.

It is hard to describe how powerful and effective this stuff is.

I basically had a "carpet" of these stickers and also goatheads.

In one single application I got rid of 99.5%.

I have observed that even the overspray of this stuff, or a very sloppy application, with poor watering in, is still extremely effective.

You have to get this stuff down and watered in before you get a 3 day average soil temp above 55deg F.

I use this site for soil temps

Or too keep it simple for most of Texas between Feb 15 and Mar15.

I'm not sure how well it would work in the long run but there is an ad running across my facebook right now for a product that is basically a rolling mat that picks up the burs, then they get scraped off into a bucket. You push it.

I'll try to find it.

Also… these things bloom in first week of June and also first week of September.

I've have not had to do two applications. Just once in February.
