Do the PVC pipe on springs around feeder legs really work?

After having zero coons last year I now regularly have a dozen or more on camera hogging through my protein and yesterday the little bastages managed to break the feed spout on one of my protein feeders compmetely off.

I intend to skillet shoot them with T shot this weekend but i know i wont get them all. So i need to figure out how to keep them at bay as best I can.

What coons don't destroy, they crap on. Try wiring carpet tack strips to your feeder legs.

I've seen guys swear by them but if there is one thing that I know about raccoons, it's that they will find a way around almost any obstruction if protein feed is involved. That's probably the only drawback to feeding free choice protein…

I also seem to remember someone on here sharing a raccoon cover for spouts on a protein feeder that dropped and covered the holes when any weight was applied. Seems like a great idea in concept but once again, life (raccoons) will likely find a way.

Try and kill as many as you can is the best advice I can give you.

Boss Buck Shark teeth on elevated feeder legs work flawlessly.

Be careful working with and around them, because they are sharp!!!

On the ground feeder types, you will likely have a fly problem and will need to look up the recipes for Golden Malrin. Using that recipe will absolutely 100% kill your problem flys.

I haven't used them but- https://www.coonhood.com/

Golden malrin has supposedly had the potency reduced due to the off label use.

Dukes dog proof traps are deadly on them but they'll show back up almost as fast as you remove them. I also don't run them close to season because ill have 50 buzzard swarming the feeder and it runs the deer off.

Yea pvc on legs works. You can split it so that you don't have to empty and lift feeder to install. Split goes on inside and single baling wire on outside to hang.

Not sure on the pvc tube over the legs thing, but I have tried the carpet tack strips and other sharp pointed strips attached to legs and it absolutely did not work for me. It didn't even slow them down in fact. I had game cam pics of them standing directly on the strips. Didn't seem to bother them at all.

22 mag and a spotlight.

Never can get all of them, but you can thin them out.

What about hot wiring like an electric fence? I think if you kill one another or two will take its place.

For corn feeders, simply use either a good varmint cage that prevents them from getting to the spinner plate or one of the spinner plates that closes off the funnel when it's not spinning.

I no longer use any feeders with tall legs anymore; I've switched over completely to "stand and fill" style.

For free choice protein feeders, about the only deterrent I've found is to kill them. I've set out leg capture style traps near the feeders and have caught and shot tons of them. The only thing that really does is slow them down, as more eventually take their place. It's a constant battle. If anyone comes up with a surefire way to keep them off free choice feeders, I want to know about it.

And no, I am not just getting information from internet. I was a government trapper for many years a long time ago. Had many many ranchers that used it. Saw way more coon sign on properties that didn't.

We have galvanized pipe for legs and are using vaseline. Just lather it up good and enjoy the show. It has worked extremely well for us. We have rather tall hanging style tripod feeders and we applied it about 4-6 ft up the legs.

Can you come out of retirement? We have some government that needs trapping now.

Does Monkey Chow work on Democrats?

Smear vaseline on the legs and they can't get any gription to climb them. Plus it doesn't stink like auto grease which seems to attract hogs.

I've seen the coon hoods, but those things are expensive as hell and won't prevent them from getting to the spouts and hanging on them until they eventually break.

I set traps periodically, but only when I spend the night because if you don't check the traps fairly early, coons will die and start stinking to high heaven quickly.

I found this old thread when googling about monkey chow and coons.

Try calling it a raccoon feeder then chances are you'll see nothing but deer around it.

Old hill country legend. Feed stores keep it around for the new guys each year.

We tried that too. Just ended up with all kinds of nasty crap stuck to the legs of the feeder - dust, leaves, corn, protein pellet crumbles… made a huge mess. If you have a lot of coons, it's short-lived too. A few get coated with goo and wipe it off for their buddies.

Golden malrin will take care of the coons as well… at least that's what I've heard

Yeah, we tried that out west in Cottle county. Between the wind blowing all the time, and red dusty soil, the legs were covered. Think it made it easier for them.

That's what I experienced in South Texas. The live turned to glue with our blow sand. I don't know that it helped them but it wasn't slick for very long.

There are a lot of feeders out there these days that raccoons can't defeat. We don't have any problems with raccoons at all.
Thaddeus Beauregard
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah it's not hard to beat them with timed corn feeders. A good varmint guard design or some other means of denying them access to the funnel is all that's required there. It's the free choice gravity protein feeders that poses the problem. Protein pellets don't feed well from feeders designed to throw corn.

We have timed protein feeders from Lamco that have been flawless

Except timed protein feeders are not that great and free choice is way more effective. Have you ever dug out 500lbs of protein out of one because it clogged up? I have on several occasions.

In addition, most people aren't going to just go out and buy a $750-1000 feeder if they already have a working one but a problem with raccoons.
docb

Well than my best advice would be good luck. I don't think there is a way to coon proof a free choice feeder.

Those Lamco timed protein feeders start at $1K for just the 300# cap one and from there go to $1800 for the 1500# cap model. I guess a case can be made that they might recoup an ROI based on protein saved from coons, but it seems to me they just provide them with a handy trough to stand in as they eat smaller amounts at prescribed times of day. In addition, it looks to me like nothing protects the protein in the trough from rain, so it's free to clump up in the trough.
