First year we thought we would may have pecans

Pecan tree is 8/9 years old

I believe we have had pecan moths before or something like that and we have been using dominion 2L I think for soil treatment

But this is frustrating

I have not seen that before and I grew up on the coast where we had pecan trees everywhere.

We would get web worms/bag worms really badly some years but you would have noticed that.

That is Hickory Shuckworm damage. A common pecan pest.

A soft IPM approach is to release Trichogramma minutum parasitic wasps. They attack caterpillar eggs and significantly reduce the population pecan nut case bearer and hickory shuckworm along with other pests like webworms.
I buy several egg cards every spring and release over 3 weeks starting in late February.

Green lacewings are another good beneficial to release.

If you want to spray insecticide, see below. Insecticide will kill your beneficial insects so you are aware.

See attached link for L-1140 homeowner spray schedule from the world's experts on pecans at Texas A&M.

Aggie Horticulture has several good publications if you want to use insecticides. Like the one I linked above.
Send a private message and I'll give my phone number to call if you have more questions.

Do consider using the softer, less lethal techniques first like releasing trichograma parasitic wasps.

Dominion 2L active ingredient is imadacloprid which is a neo-nicotinoid which mimics the toxin in nicotine.

They are systemic, the insecticide will spread throughout the plant, including the parts you want to eat. That's why it's so effective on pests like citrus leafminers and aphids.

Neo-nic insecticides like Dominion 2L are very lethal on bee populations, spraying at night doesn't provide much benefit to the bees. It can get spread back into the hive killing off the entire colony.

Personally I would not use a neo-nic like imadachloprid on anything that I planned on eating. The insecticide is spread by the plant into the fruit.

As an example , I have brown scale breaking out of control on several citrus in pots. A softer chemical
Spinosad didn't work as expected.
I plan to use imadachloprid and will discard every fruit on each treated plant.

Never had shuckworm problems in our Bell County orchard, but case bearer was a boogieman. Timing was everything, and we used Sevin. That's a pretty safe one around gardens and pets, but it is rough on non-targets. Are there time "slots" for shuckwarm treatment also?

I also never had an issue with shuckworm. I do know they have three generations in a single season.

So I'm going to default to the world's pecan expert entomologists at Texas A&M. Good information in this bulletin.

Time for Hickory shuckworm / 3rd gen casebearer damage, but either way they stay in the hull before falling off.

A critter ate those (if you didn't disturb them.)

My first thought, but then shuckworm was mentioned and it got above my experience level.
