I always wanted to go and never took the time. Our trips are packed with stuff so never booked something. So this morning was my first real fly fishing opportunity. Went with a guide in Red River NM. I am hooked. I didn't have any issues picking it up. Regular casting and roll casting. This was private so it wasn't the wild wild river I have seen in pictures. But great for me to start. Guide was an ag class of '80. He taught me all about the "match the hatch" slogan. I didn't realize how technical things were with flies based on hatches and time of year. We fished with caddis fly and then a streamer. I ended up catching and landing 4. Missed quite a few. 3 rainbows and one brook. These were small but still beautiful. I can't wait to go again.

Congratulations and welcome to the addiction.

As saltwater fly fisherman I enjoyed watching LRHF page through to get the just right fly out of the box when I went fishing with him in CO. Much different than my local fishery where I check to see that most of the feathers are still attached and the hook isn't so rusty I could get tetanus. Redfish don't see that well.

OP - I see your in Norman. I'm in Edmond.

The guy in this video is from southwest Oklahoma and he teaches fly fishing. He has a casting pond at his home, but he does lessons on the Blue during the season.

Have you fished the Blue before?

Have not fished the blue. Not even sure where it is. Most my fishing is on n the bay as I am originally from Houston and family is still there. Striper on texoma and then bass on our farm ponds. I want to check out some places closer now.

Due to the addiction I already grabbed a Redington Wrangler kit and multiple flies so that I can work on it. Now I need to plan some trips. I have heard broken bow is good too. Just over fished.

The Blue River has public access points near Tishomingo - not a bad drive for you.

The ODWC has a helpful section on their website about it (as well as other places in Oklahoma to fish for trout - the lower Illinois and Lower Mountain Fork are year round and the others stocked in the winter.

Lots less pressure in late fall, winter and early spring...spring break to start of football season, it is a little crazy down there

Welcome to the addiction!

That's a nice starter rig. You'll get it slimy, no doubt.

Those western brookies are the bane of the western folk, but they are aggressive, tasty and beautiful.

Good show and congrats!

Yeah, certainly easy to get hooked! Speaking of the Blue - a different one actually. Just hit the Blue River for the 3rd straight day up near Silverthorne, CO.

Welcome! I'm only about 5 months ahead of you, but I'm hooked (pun intended)!

Finally bit the bullet and my first pair of wading boots arrived in the mail today
