I was sitting on the bank of the Guadalupe this afternoon and saw something that didnt seem right. There was a turtle that seemed to have a little turtle following its every move. The little turtle was about 1/5 the size. It looked like a mama turtle showing a baby turtle how to live.
I know, or at least think I know that reptiles are absentee parents. For the most part, they lay their eggs and then they are done. Crocadillions are the exception but I know mama doesnt stuck around long and also will eat their babies at some point.
I know it wasnt something stuck to the turtle - looked with my binoculars. I also know it wasnt just 2 random turtles that happened to surface at the same time. I saw the pair 4-5 times as they swam up and down the river. There were several other turtles that I saw but those two were the only ones swimming together.
Just odd behavior? Am I unaware of a turtle/reptilian habit of taking care of its young for an extended period of time? Paranormal?
Also saw about a 3-4 foot long nose gar. It has been forever since ive seen one of those.
