Due to a long power outage from recent storms a friend lost several pounds of deer meat in the freezer. Insurance will cover the cost of the meat but how would you put a value on it? Let's say the deer was taken to Westphalia Meat Market and there were 3 lbs. of ground breakfast sausage, 3 lbs. of link sausage, and 1 backstrap that were lost.

I'm terrified to amortize my expense on guns, optics, lease license gas corn and ammo per pound of meat harvested….

Good luck

I mean a processor wouldn't even work on that little bit of meat.

But I'd put the value at $10/lb.

if it makes much difference, the deer was field dressed and skinned when it was dropped off

That shouldn't matter. If you - he got anything you should be happy. No offense.

What was the cost of your lease , feed , and travel expenses

I think the place by me sells deer meat ground/sausage at retail for $10-$15 per lb depending on what you're buying.

That's alot lower than Jeff Foxworthy calculated though.

Sounds like a fun friend if he's trying to nickel and dime the insurance for 10lbs of meat. Pour one out for all the meat lost.

Exactly, this is ridiculous.

I agree with around $8-10/lb.

I also don't mind someone trying to get every cent out of an insurance company they possibly can, after faithfully paying premiums for so long.

That being said, trying to get reimbursed for 7 lbs of meat that spoiled in a freezer would be like trying to write off 2 ball point BIC pens that were in a desk if your office got broken into. This seems hardly worth the time or effort for $50-70.

Billing insurance, eh? Here's how you do this. You need to look at this differently. It's not JUST 10lb of meat.

10 lbs doesn't matter. You didn't go to the lease to kill 10 pounds. You shot the whole animal. It's the same reason I don't charge per shingle, one shingle, 30 shingles, same price...they come in a package.

Travel time
ammo
fuel
anything, and i mean anything that went into your hunt if you had to go back out and replace that meat.
processing fees
taxes

Figure it up, send them a bill. They will negotiate it down, or try to, so be proud of your work.

This is why and how insurance pays me $600 to tarp a 5x5 leak. The 5$ tarp isn't the expensive part, it's the retail price of it, time, service charge, my hourly rate, going back out when the adjuster insists on seeing the underside for a photo op.....they can and do pay that without any question or complaint. You are doing the same thing, except with meat!

Insurance companies don't think twice about dicking us over so when you have the chance to get as much money back as you can, you freaking do it.

Y'all are way over thinking this. I have adjusted several wild game food losses over the years. The adjuster should go online and everything from deer and elk to more exotic meat is for sale. I look for the more expensive listings and write a check.

I'm not trying to get into an argument here because I see your point. But, people ***** and complain about insurance costs going up but it's because of crap like this.

I would hate to have this guys kids over for a party and they get hurt.

This is why crap loads of people are having sky high home insurance rate hikes.

Had lightning hit my house and these guys wrote me a check for about 8,000 and said "if anything else dies in the next 365 does, send it in. Maybe the carriers should start saying "no"? To claims? Is that what you want them to do to reduce costs? I don't.

In reality, yes.

This is derailing a bit. My point was that even though hunting is completely unnecessary and a luxury, everything costs money and if your carrier is asking for costs, give them the costs. There is more to cost than just the price of the meat.

I'm assuming you are implying I charged the carrier too much. They require me to perform emergency repairs or they can deny my customer coverage.

"Hey Mr. Farm Bureau the lightning destroyed my wife's favorite vibrator because it wasn't plugged into a surge protector. Can we start looking into replacement costs for that?"
OnlyForNow

You're correct, this is derailed. And you're also correct that there is more than just the "process" cost to sausage like this.

Don't forget to charge them for the electricity required to get the freezer back down below freezing, where it was before the incident. Gotta go for every penny, right?!

I fully anticipated a really sad story about a freezer full of 100+ pounds of wild game meat, gone bc of a storm.

7lb? This has to be a troll job yes?

Who's his carrier, and what is his deductible? Or was there extensive damage due to the storm, besides the meat in the freezer?

I've left a lot of money on the table w gfci's killing my freezers. Didn't know this was a thing

Unless you have a clause in your policy for things like this and there is no deductible, or it is less than $100, then it's not worth filing a claim.
El Texicano

Most policies pay up to $500 for food spoilage losses as long as the loss occurs on premise. Example: if everyone loses power then no coverage. If a tree limb falls and pulls the meter mast from the house, then coverage applies (on premise). Also ,the total dollar amount of the loss is also subject to your deductible.
