Have had the immense pleasure of helping all three of my GFs kiddos catch their first fish in the last month, and they've really found a passion for fishing( which makes me stupendously happy). Even the little guy(4yo, but he is more a 5/6yo size wise... boy is going to be the mountain that rides!) Is starting to get the idea and has been able to land a couple of fish.

Anyway, proud of kiddos aside: I don't know where to take these guys. Most of my haunts around Sabine Pass over the years are too hard for the little one to get in, and there's 5 of us( 4, 11, 14), 6 if their other parents comes( everyone is on good terms and friendly, that's not unrealistic to have happen) so space is an issue as well.

I've taken them on Walter Unphrey's state park pier, and that actually worked pretty well, especially with the railings to keep stubborn little terrorists... I mean uh "kids"... from getting in the water. I know the piers on the galveston seawall exist, and I know seawolf has a pier. I'd be happy for other ideas. Equipment wise I'm set up for anything from a small 30 class trolling rig, to the surf, down to panfish rods, I just have to be conscious of how big the fish are vs how small the kiddos are :-).

Some ofnyall will feel this one: I uttered a phrase I NEVER thought I'd say in my life this weekend.... "damn I'm glad the hardheads showed up".

Texas City Dike
Clear Lake Park
El Jardin Beach Park
Sylvan Beach Park and pier
Sea Wolf Park and pier
Sea Isle Fishing Pier
Highland Bayou Park

Surfside and Quintana Jetties if feeling brave with them. You can roller skate all the way to the end.

Get em out on my boat. It is setup great for kiddos..... tons of room. Big wide open.

this right here...EOT
I guess you could add beach front....you could go big/heavy for sharks/bull reds....or maybe lighter for pompano/trout/harheads
plus kids could swim, play, build sand castles, etc if they are bored of fishing

Do you take charters or have a fishing service?( I'm sorry I don't frequent the OB like I used to!) They would love it I think, the 4 yo was ready to leave for a life at sea for someone's offshore righ at Unphrey's!

And thank you for the list! I've never been on most of them, but will be doing my research! I'm used to chasing marsh drains and culverts around Sabine Pass, so my knowledge of the spots is limited!!

Broke my surf rod out this afternoon, in not as rust as I thought I was .

This whole experience has been a blast. I've been a part of teaching younguns to fish before, and it always makes me so happy, whether it's there first fish or passing on the knowledge that's been given to me piece meal.

My dad died when I was 11, but instilled a deep love of the water andnfishing in me. Mom likes to fish, and she tried her damndest, but most of what I know came from the kindness of strangers who stopped to teach, both in person, and honestly more than once here. I thank every one of you, and will never hesitate to offer a hand and kit when I can!

While not really related to what you are talking about, the thread brought back a memory from many years ago. I was surf fishing for specs at Sea Rim on a north wind. Gulf was slick as glass and I had several trailing out on a stringer. Tooling along without a care in the world chest deep when I felt something bump my leg. At the same instance a dorsal fin cut the water right beside me. Porpoise, but I damn near died on the spot. Went and sat in the truck for a while trying to get my heart to slow down. Finally gave up and went home.

Had that happen at mud Island once!! I had flounder on a stringer and got bumped. I took the smallest one I had off and held it out, she real gently took it and kinda floated off. I got to put a hand on her and the calf before they scooted. One of the most surreal things I've ever seen, definitely above the water!

Little dude got to see a dolphin on the ferry for the first time the other day and nearly stroked out. I may never get to be a parent, but knowing I've been a positive and stable figure in these kid's lives has brought me more joy in the last three months then I've ever known. Even if the relationship with mom ends someday, I hope our time together will be remembered as a good one for all involved. I've already told her we aren't allowed to fight..

I thought Porpoise didn't live in our area?

No porpoise in Gulf of Mexico. They are all dolphin.

Dolphins, porpoises, basically the same thing. Doesn't change the story. I thought it was a damn shark.

Were going to brave Texas City tomorrow( dropping oldest step kid off with the other parent there anyway, everyone wants to go fishing.... apparently they have been talking non stop about the last trip) if we can find a place to wet a line.

Anyway, similar line of questions to the original question: we'll be coming in down 146 fr9m baytown, reccomendations for a wait and tackle in the area? I have tackle and rods sorted well enough, and some frozen mullet, but would like shrimp to get the minions catching croakers and possibly buy some larger/better mullet.

Can in my tackle bag, can in the bait buckets, can in mom's bag. I'm so pasty I go straight from blue cheese to hot wing.... trust me, they don't get a choice!!

Maybe too late here, but don't use too much weight if you are fishing on the dike. You need to reel up fast or you will get hung up in the rocks. Also, the fish are smart there. They will take your shrimp and head for the rocks, so you gotta be fast. Still a couple of bait shops atthe foot of the dike. There is also a big really nice playground if the fish aren't biting.

Caught us just in time! Has been a learning curve, but we banked a 45+" black drum right after we got here! I do ok. I've fished the north levee at pleasure island since I was 12, but the newbies it's a bit rough on. The piers look nice but not with a crazy 4yo

Great job! Bet the kids loved seeing that big ugly.

The kids were amazed, the adults were having a fit to LOL. Fish was my PB for a black drum, every bit 48" or so looking at the pictures, maybe a bit over that. OOOOOOld man, but he recovered and eventually swam off just fine. I didn't have the heart to actually bring him up and measure... he was huge, that was enough!

I'm now on the hunt for a couple new surf rods, unfortunately a thrash while trying to land snapped my old rod.

Nice work getting then out! And congrats on the big black drum....

I have a bunch of big game rod and reels for sale in the classifieds. Excellent gear.
