Thinking about trading my Tahoe in for a truck. I want something nice, but doesn't have to be absolute top of the line luxury. Has to be 4x4.

I have driven nothing but a Chevy Tahoe for close to the past 20 years. My last two have had transmission issues......early. Stick with Chevy? Ford? GMC? Toyota Tundra? Weigh in!

All of them are going to have their issues. The last vehicle that was built that was damn near bulletproof was the Tundra with the 5.7L V8. Since the year switched to the 6cyl, it appears they're still working through some kinks.

I am not sure I would drive another Chevy/GMC… I hear nothing but problems with transmission, torque converters, and just other small things in the vehicle, much like dodge I remember growing up. The best vehicle I ever owned was a 2003 Tahoe that went almost 300k with damn near zero problems. They don't make them like that anymore.

Ford 5.0L seems pretty dang reliable and it the ecoboost in 2.7L seems to be the same. The 3.5L boost is the most capable and fun of them all but it's had issues too. Although my last one went about 200k without any major issues. I prefer the interior of the Fords over any of the trucks.

Dodge has made some strides and their interiors are much nicer than they used to be. I'm just not sure I could ever buy a dodge after working on them in college and HS, the parts on them were absolute junk.

Not really a great option out there in my opinion. Good luck!

Same experience with the older Tahoe models! I had a 2003 as well (or maybe it was 2002) that I drove forever. I had a 2015 that I drove a long time. My transmission went out at 38,000 miles on my 2021. Traded it for a 2023. It's currently sitting in the shop with transmission issues.......with only 17,000 miles!

What about other SUVs? Might as well include that option.

My vote is a 3/4 ton gasser in either Ford or Chevy.

I drive a 2016 1 ton 6.7 L Powerstroke, love it and plan on driving it another 150k miles. Have always driven 3/4 ton gas fords for work and really like them too.

This past fall, the company I work for switched to 3/4 ton gas Dodge Ram pickups, Bighorn Editions. Super nice on the inside but they suck other wise. Multiple guys I know here at work have driven through puddles and started having electrical issues while driving after that. The front ends pop and creak really bad just going down caliche roads. A guy that pumps the route next to me went to the yard in Midland to get his new pickup and was driving it back home and his power steering pump blew up at 78 miles on the brand new pickup.

So my advice is to stay away from the new Rams.

Same camp in GMC. 2023 Tahoe sat in the shop for 3 months with transmission issues at 18k miles. About the time that happened - I replaced the transmission in my 2014 1/2 4x4 with 125k miles. Had a 2002 Tahoe that went to 200k miles before I sold it to a family member and it still gets driven. Have had 4 other older model suburbans and 1 other Tahoe with no major issues.

Very interested in the Toyota Land Cruiser coming out late year. Not sure what I'm going to do about a truck.

Do you want an SUV like ride in a truck?

If so…I just drove my buddies 2023 raptor on a 6hr road trip.

Incredible ride.

Ford and GM have been using the exact same 10 speed transmission that they co-developed for the last several years. Nothing is perfect and all are going to have issues at some point. I would test drive all the trucks you are considering and get which one you like best based on how they drive and look.

Good year to pick up a truck since this is the last year that a few of them are making V8s. Upgraded to a TRX last month, ride is incredible.

That's cool man.

Just giving my input on what I have seen in person out of the new Rams since they were rolled out, here where I work. I put about 300 miles a day on my work pickup, so do all of my other co-workers that come out of San Angelo. About half highway miles and half lease road miles. The Rams ain't holding up out here like the Ford pickups do. You can do with my input whatever you like.

I mentioned a Ram 2500 and you linked something on the reliability of the Ram 1500 anyways.

I've got a 2017 in 3.5L and I love it. I had a King Ranch 2015 V-8 4X4 that I lost in Harvey and I decided that I didn't want to pay for the logo and wanted better gas mileage, so went with Lariat in 3.5. Smoother and quicker than the V-8 with the turbo assist.

Caveat -- I also ditched the 4X4 because I had used it exactly 2X (beach) before the flood. I know you said that was a must.
AgLA06

Yep. I read it wrong. I have no idea on the HDs.

The only thing I can say there is RAM and Ford dominate the trucks the cowboys use. It wasn't close at Rodeo Houston. And I'm specifically talking about the Contestants that rely on their trucks and trailers to get them to every Rodeo. Not FFA kids.

I had a 2009 Ram 1500 V8 2WD named "The Tampon" & drove the hound dog hell out of that thing for 240k miles. It was a GREAT pickup and I never had a single thing go wrong with it the entire time I owned it for 6 years. Sadly, these new 3/4 tons aren't as reliable in my opinion.

Damn! Sounds like this is a common thing. Apparently the 6 speed transmissions were a hell of a lot more reliable than the new 10 speeds.

5th generation RAMs are nothing like the predecessors. I would have never considered owning one until this generation. 1500s are arguably the best truck on the road. It wouldn't surprise me if the HDs aren't as reliable as the older basic models or that Ford is probably king there.

I want a Rebel 2500 bad. I don't need or want a Raptor or TRX, but a Rebel or Trenmor seems to be the perfect combination of 2500 and options all around for western hunting, camper towing, and every day driver. I'm just not a fan of the grill.

It's supposedly the same in their trucks.

My neighbors 2021 chevy 1500 just blew a transmission at 55k miles. Dealership offered him $3k to trade the truck in as they're tired of dealing with the bad transmissions.

2016 F150 transmission went out at 55k miles. Well known problem Ford refuses to recall. Buyer beware.

Other than that and having your tail lights stolen, its a good truck.

You are going to get more personal opinions than anything asking a question like this.

In the last 4 years I've had 3 trucks:

2019 GMC 1500, SLT model I think. 4wd, V8
2021 Ford F150, XL model I think. 2wd, V8
2018 Ram 2500, Laramie Longhorn, 4wd, 6.7 Cummins

Wife has a 2019 Tahoe, whatever the leather package interior model is, 2wd, V8

GMC - fairly solid truck. Company truck, came with old man tires and wheels. I put a levelling kit on the front and AT4 wheels and good tires on it and it made a huge difference in how it looked and drove. Interior was meh at best, ergos just weren't well thought out in my opinion at all - especially in the center console. Good power, could pull my buggy and L series Kubota tractor with little issue. Very quiet and smooth ride. Got about 19mpg average.

Ford - POS in just about every possible way. Company truck, which is why it was 2wd. No guts in the engine at all, accelleration was just not good. Ergos weren't bad on the interior. Could pull my buggy or tractor, but it didn't like doing so at all. Phone interface with the radio sucked. Noisier than the GMC, ride was not bad but not as good as I expected for a 2wd vehicle. Got about 19mpg average.

Ram - got rid of the company truck and bought this one used. Admittedly, I like Ram and I like the Cummins engine, so I'm naturally biased. Ergos on the Ram are far better than anything Chevy or Ford puts out. Ride is stiff, but it's a 3/4 ton 4wd and to be expected. Not without issues, but the issues are very tolerable to me - biggest one is changing the oil filter sucks, but I've done it enough now on a similar model that I'm used to it I guess. Still hate it and still want to beat the ever living sht out of the designers for this, but it is what it is. It's a Cummins diesel, so power and torque are in huge supply. Gets about 18.4mpg average, that's with a lot of highway driving and a fair amount of jobsite driving/idling. Bought it used with 120k on it already.

Tahoe - It's a Tahoe, not comparable to a truck really. 2wd, V8. It's a grocery getter and Uber for the kids mostly, but she likes it. Gets good mileage for what it is, has enough power but accelleration is lacking. Rides great, ergos are well above average. Irks me that it has heated, but not air conditioned seats - have to go up another luxury package for those.

And a flawed door handle / access to horn wire through the grill that master thieves have perfected.

Also, I had to have the starter replaced. I'm religious now about turning off the auto start/stop when I first get in. Not only are the constant shutdowns annoying, they also wreck your starter.

Ford is probably the best truck out there right now. They were having problems with the phase balancers on their eco-boost engines but that seems to be resolved now. Stick with a 2021 or newer.

That being said, my brother drives a 2020 Chevy High Country with a 6.2L. He had a few problems with some of the electronics early on but no problems at all the last few years. He has towed his 37' bumper hitch travel trailer to Colorado a couple of times with no transmission issues.

My parents won't buy anything else moving forward. 2008 Sequoia Platinum with 260,000 miles. I think the only issue is a little bit of a loose steering.

If Tundra would ever come out with a 3/4 ton, I'd seriously consider them.
