I have some heavy grass I need to maintain. I already ground up all the brush and small trees last year, with a forestry mulcher. So, it's covered with VERY ragged "mulch". Now grass and weeds are growing through, which is great. It looks really good back there, but I need a way to maintain it.

I cannot get my zero-turn back there, nor would I if I could. It's rough with lots of sticks in the mulch, and some steep creek banks. It's not a huge area, maybe 1/2 acre at most. But too much to consistently do with a weed eater.

I'm thinking a walk behind string trimmer may be the ticket. A brush mower (like a DR) would be overkill, and way over budget. Is a walk behind string trimmer what I'm after? Or is there another tool I need to be looking at?

Can anyone rec an affordable option that will get the job done? I'm thinking it needs to be knocked down at least once per month, for 8-9 months of the year.

Does anyone have a decent running walk behind trimmer you no longer need and would be willing to sell to a Good Ag? I'm in North Dallas.

TIA for the recs

I bought a Dr All Terrain walk behind mower for $300 on CL. The walk behind trimmers are similar price but way way more work. I use it for similar duty to what you describe. I tried my neighbors walk behind trimmer just to compare.....for about 5 minutes....it isn't even close. Won't be experimenting with a walk behind trimmer like that again.....

Wow, you found a DR for $300? I haven't seen anything close to that. I'll keep my eyes peeled for sure.

Look at the Cub Cadet Trimmer. I haven't had any trouble with mine and it knocks down just about anything I go after. I use it for 2-3ft tall grass and weeds with no problem.

Not a walk behind, but I have a Stilh power scythe that I can take in touch to reach places. It's like a hedge trimmer but bigger. It's a trimmer attachment. You can swap out for weedeater or pole saw and several other attachments.

Appreciate it. I've seen the Cubs around a lot, good to hear a positive review

It will cut saplings up to about an inch diameter too.

I retrofitted my older string trimmer with a metal cutting blade. It's not perfect but it will chew up heavy grass, vines, and small brush limbs. It works but it takes a lot of work to cover area, as a string trimmer has only about a foot diameter.

Yeah, that's my issue. I've got about 1/2 acre to cover. I can do it with my string trimmer. But that would be a beating to do every month. I'm looking for a wider swath. Maybe I need to just get an old beater walk behind mower…

I got one for free off a curb. Yes, I asked the homeowner. Just needed a spark plug.

I really like my trimmer/mower. Besides,DR, I have seen other brands at Tractor Supply and Murdocks.

This thread got me looking and I noticed tractor supply currently has a fairly decently rated model for $100 off, so I bought one. Should have it in next week and be able to try it out.

I would love to hear a report when you get her up and running.

Which one did you get, if you don't mind sharing? All I see is the Yardmax, but it's on $45 off.

I have a DR and a trimmer that I would like to see go away. Both were running when the last time they were used but that's Ben probably 3 years ago. The DR will likely need a battery and carb work, maybe need a pulley alignment too. Got some extra parts that will go wit it. Contact me at jejdaATyahu if interested. I'm south of Waco

Update: that discounted walk behind trimmer from TS works pretty well. It's easier to cover more area than with a handheld. string trimmer. Harder to reach touch spots, but it doesn't get stalled by whippy grass. In fact, I learned first hand it will eat up a dangling boat cover tie down strap. It's like a lightweight push mower that can get more places more easily.
