Snakes and First Aid

Our survey crew has run into some danger noodles recently. We want to get them a first aid kit, a snake bite kit and snake guards. We want to keep all this in the truck with them every day.

Anyone have recommendations based on experience?

The guys are wanting guards instead of chaps or boots. We're also thinking we should try to learn how to use the snake bite kit once we get it, not when we need to use it.

Thank you for your time

Take precautions with snake gaters, boots, etc.

Do not get a snake bite kit.

Call 911. Try and stay calm. Transport anyone bitten to nearest health care professional. Draw on skin with a sharpie where bite occurred and keep track of it. Remove jewelry.

Your only way is to protect yourself from being bitten. I don't mind snake chaps with snake boots. If I'm not wearing both in high grass or thicker brush, I'll give it a strong stomp every few steps. If they feel you coming they'll normally slither away before you know they are even there

Good info.

I've seen some stuff recently saying the little tools in the kits to suck the venom out are all BS. But is there anything to have in a kit to help with a snake bit situation that is not in a normal first aid kit?

Don't think so. Get to a hospital asap and hope it's a dry bite.

Call 911 and tell them you're coming through fast and are only stopping when you get to a place with doctors that have antivenin

There's a technical support forum https://texags.com/forums/69

And you can test your stuff out there. Think there's some information as well

Not really. Again, keeping the person calm is the top thing to do combined with getting them to a hospital. We had antivenin for the specific types of snakes we had at the zoo. A lot was synthetic, and had a certain shelf life. The more stressed they are, the quicker their heart beats, the quicker the venom moves.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I have a pair of these and just ordered another pair for my son now that they have a smaller size. They are well made, comfortable, and easy to get on and off which would be good for your guys for on and off use and can be shared.

Bonus points for being an Aggie owned company.

Animated gif of chick jiggling her breast seems to pass muster with the mods, yet they get triggered when I posted a photo of a bowl of Cheerios in the Christopher's thread even when I'm
Praising Christopher's. Go figure.

That said, aside from chaps or guards, it's best to contact your nearest hospitals in advance to know which one has antivenom. Here in BCS, that means St Joseph's in Bryan which is the only carrier in stock I hear.

I agree with the above. I've been bitten before and so was my 2 year old. Both times, the hospital marked the red line and monitored it and they also administered antibiotics. That's it. Ours were copperheads. Identify the snake if you can or snap a picture. Many have different types of venom and treatments vary but cutting and sucking venom is not advised. As for antivenin, both times the local ER don't entertain that idea unless absolutely necessary. If you're in Texas you only need to identify about 4 snakes, the rest are fine. Learn them. Antivenin is not necessary in all cases as the body will metabolize the venom fine, even if it does hurt like a mofo. But, that's why you need to know the snake. Copperheads are the suck, but they are less sucky than Rattlesnake….and treatments are very different.

This physician works at HCA Kingwood. If in the greater Houston area go to this hospital and ask for Dr. Spencer Greene by name.

Prior to transitioning to working in the office full time I was a wetland delineator for 10 years, walking through the swamps and brush all year long basically. Most of the time we were on the lines or pads with the surveyors at the same time. In those 10 years yes I was hit once or twice and so where the surveyors. All of the hits only happened when someone was actively messing with the snake and all hits for me and my companies surveyors where on boots! So instituting hard rules about not handling or messing with snakes is paramount and also having a good pair of snake boots. Forget all the other stuff as Rubus and Smilax as well as anything else with thorns snags chaps and those plastics guards are the most uncomfortable POS's ever. A snake bite kit causes more trauma and is absolutely worthless, monitor the bite, take photos of the snake and know where nearest hospital are the best paths for preparing for a snake bite!

Are they actually using species specific antivenin? I thought Crofab eliminated the need for that outside of a coral snake, if actually administered. Sure seems like it's only used if absolutely necessary.

If you're referring to the thread on the Aggieland board, the mods on that forum delete about half my posts. No joking or criticism about local govt allowed.

Some can some can't.

A snake fang can probably go through it if you tried to get it in, but why take the risk if guards are an option?

That's a great article. So good it's being printed to put in my ranch/ hunting cabin. Glad that Dr. is nearby.

My cousin was bitten on the inside of his wrist by a presumed copperhead while picking up a pallet out of a stack on his grass farm. Thinking wasp, he ran back to the truck to see the twin puncture wounds. Luckily, no venom was injected the er doc determined.

Yep. But I was actually praising Christopher's and posting a meme of the Cheerio bowl to a user who was knocking Christopher. The mod then went on saying she wasn't going to go through the effort to remove the photo, and instead deleted the post/praise, claiming it was an attempt to "derail" the thread.

But I better stop here because I might derail the OPs subject on jiggly boobies and trigger another mod's endorphin rush for pumping out bold text. Carry on…

Same. I doubt a copper head or small cotton mouth could bite through ropers or your average rubber boots. BUT a big rattlesnake and big cottonmouth are heavy snakes and have super sharp fangs so when they strike it's like getting punched by someone with a needle stuck between their fingers.

This is excellent advice. In the hospital, crotalid envenomations are treated with pain medication and antivenom infusions as required to control the spread of swelling and the coagulopathy. There are really no effective first aid measures which can be performed in the field.

Based on some advice I received here on the OB, I bought a pair of these at Academy when I needed to do some heavy brush clearing in an unfamiliar area:

ForEverlast Real Tree Camo Snake Guard Shields

They weren't uncomfortable, and I wore them for hours at a time over some steel-toed work boots. I recall they were under $50.00.

That said, I'm glad they were never tested. The main thing is to keep reminding yourself not to bend down and pick up anything if you don't make damn sure there's not a snake hiding out.

A guard on your calf won't do crap when you get your hand, arm or face bitten.

And since you included a 'pic' for our trouble, I'll mention the snake bite kit I saw in an old Popeye cartoon from years and years ago.

Popeye opens the kit, and there's a piece of paper in it with a picture of a snake. An area is circled in red on the snake, and the instructions say "Bite Snake Here."

A second for the Listos. Much more comfortable and I've only tested it on south Texas brush. They have a couple sizes as well.

OP, why does your survey crew have an aversion to snake boots?

I love my Chips, they are comfortable, fit well and can be worn all day over multiple days.

Strike height supposedly can get up to 1/2 the length of the snake.

Twice I've had a rattler launch at me at a level that was way higher than what standard guards cover. Easily above my knees and I'm 6'3". One strike hit the bed of our gator UTV. Full length chaps are the only way I'll feel 100% though realistically they aren't going to be put on as much as guards. I guess it depends a lot too on where you are at.

Buy them turtle skin chaps and have them wear leather boots work boots. They are light weight but provide the protection to the legs. They are an expensive purchase but nothing compared to treating a snakebite at the ER.

the aggieland board mod has a different set of rules made up for that board. ANYTHING is trolling and will get deleted or banned. Zero transparency at all.

I work in the ER. Here's first aid for snake bites,
Stay calm.
Come to the ER that has antivenom. (Not all do. The large ones in BCS do)
Note the time of the bite.
Mark any redness/ swelling and the time.

Snake bite kits do not work. The venom is injected into the tissue and interstitial spaces.
DO NOT apply a tourniquet.

Correct. Aggie land was a separate website and merged into TA about 02? 04? They had their own mods and customs. They still do. And really each board has its own mod character. Here on OB like AO there is less moderation since they tend to mod their own.
