Just saw it on the news.

I didn't even know he was sick. Screw cancer.

So sad to hear. We did surgery on his dog that his daughter's boyfriend ran over right after his Unleashed cd came out. We listened to his music during the surgery. Was always hoping I would hear a song he wrote about it, but never did.

Damn.

Had some buddies that hung out with him in a small bar after playing a concert at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, LA. Said he was very humble and friendly to everyone in the place.

He covered for Merl Haggard when Merl was sick, so Merl's band could get paid. By all accounts, he was a good guy.

He played at the Texas Hall of Fame in either '99 or '00. I was a senior and bartending there and the place was packed. About 30 minutes before the show started one of his roadies came to the bar I was at and said that Toby was really sick and needed some shots of whiskey to get moving. Said he had the flu or something. So we gave him 3 or 4 shots of I think Crown. He came back a few minutes later and said he needed a couple of more and this would be a tough night.

Keith came on, did his best for three songs, and left the stage. The crowd wasn't too pleased but fortunately things didn't get out of hand. He promised to come back and do a free show for all the ticket holders and maybe two months later he did exactly that. Came back and put on a great show.

Of course we weren't exactly set up to give rain checks but we made it work.

I have to be honest, I didn't like his music at first. I thought he was another just grifting off the military soldier. I now know he was original and loved his country. And yes Cancer Sucks!

He got diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2022.

He had lost quite a bit of weight by the time of the interview.

This song was featured in the Dean Dillion documentary, Tennessee Whiskey.

Not as well known as some of his others but its one of his best.

Here's a Great story that happened, ironically on this day, February 6th, back in 2016 at The Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas.
Toby Keith was in town with his wife to watch some football and have some fun. Toby got word that Merle was in Vegas, so he went to see him … Merle was in bad shape. He needed to be in a hospital - not on a stage; but The Show Must Go On. Merle would not take charity from anyone, but he did turn to Toby and say, "How many songs of mine do you know? "All of 'em" answered Toby. "All of 'em?" replied Haggard "Yep, said Toby. And I won't need a teleprompter." "Well, stay nearby." said Haggard. After four or five songs, Merle's infected lungs were spent. He couldn't draw enough air to sing any longer. "We've, uh, we've got a special guest here tonight…" Toby came out and sang the rest of the show. Merle gave his last concert. The band, The Strangers got paid. And the audience, while not realizing it at the time, saw something special. To me this is the utmost respect, So Thanks to Toby, Merle exited the stage of his last show with his dignity in tact.

Sorry to hear it. Good down to earth guy and a good man.

BIL and SIL lived in the neighborhood of Belmar Golf Club in Norman where Toby would frequently golf. They know one of his daughters.
