Just saw it on the news.
Met my to-be wife at that show, April 6, 2000 (as a guy, I didn't remember the date, but my wife does!)agsalaska said:
He played at the Texas Hall of Fame in either '99 or '00. I was a senior and bartending there and the place was packed. About 30 minutes before the show started one of his roadies came to the bar I was at and said that Toby was really sick and needed some shots of whiskey to get moving. Said he had the flu or something. So we gave him 3 or 4 shots of I think Crown. He came back a few minutes later and said he needed a couple of more and this would be a tough night.
Keith came on, did his best for three songs, and left the stage. The crowd wasn't too pleased but fortunately things didn't get out of hand. He promised to come back and do a free show for all the ticket holders and maybe two months later he did exactly that. Came back and put on a great show.
Of course we weren't exactly set up to give rain checks but we made it work.
RIP.
Well, it worked for Corb Lund.agsalaska said:
That's cool.
Not sure if those shots helped him or hurt him. I think back then they would have helped me but nowadays they would make things worse.

If I'm not mistaken he said it was stomach cancer in a late stage. That's all I can remember.

He covered for Merl Haggard when Merl was sick, so Merl's band could get paid. By all accounts, he was a good guy.
