Looking for some recommendations for an elk outfitter in Wyoming or Colorado. I've done the public land hunts in NM, but looking for different areas/options. Interested in rifle elk for 1 or 2 hunters. It would be for me and my son.

I don't have a budget in mind, but looking for a quality hunt with the chance at a good bull.

I'm not real familiar with the point system but will do my research. Feel free to share any advice or input.

A budget, group size and the type of hunt you want would be really helpful...You are asking how long a piece of string is.

If going with an outfitter I would focus on limited entry units that are mostly wilderness in the NW corner of the state.

You can't hunt wilderness without an outfitter in WY (which is complete bogus), but you get that advantage in those areas, and it will likely be easier to draw vs the general.

Livingston Outfitters

This guy hunts out of Cody WY along the south fork of the Shoshone River. It's a six hour horseback ride into the wilderness where he has camp. He does everything right, it's a true wilderness experience. I hunted with him in 2020 and didn't get an elk, but 4 of the other 6 hunters in our camp did. His guides work really hard and the food is great.

It's not cheap. About $7,500 per person but honestly after spending five days in this camp you'll wonder why it doesn't cost more. He hunts in Game Unit 56 which isn't hard to draw a tag for, I don't think you need preference points. Reason being it's so hard to get to where the elk are. Without horses, almost impossible.

I don't really know why Wyoming requires non-residents to hunt with licensed guides in wilderness areas. I guess it's a way to help their outfitters since they don't set aside game tags for the outfitter's clients like some other states do.

Western Colorado public land elk

The guy who runs the outfit is a great Christian guy who does a good job of accommodating all ages and experience levels

Do you have points now or hoping to get lucky in the random draw?

This is of interest to me. I picked up Colorado and Wyoming along with some of Nebraska and South Dakota for sales territory.

Looking forward to spending some time in some new country, but it's a long way to Wyoming from the Texas Panhandle!

I hunted mule deer with them two years in a row. Hard working outfit and the experience is second to none. Highly recommended

If you're thinking of hunting Wyoming this fall keep in mind that the application deadline for non-residents is Jan. 31.

I don't have any points and I've never hunted this area. I am familiar with the New Mexico system, but have never done the points system anywhere.

I know if NM, you have slightly better odds getting drawn if using an outfitter, but not sure how other states work.

Check out Swift Creek Outfitters. They take a lot of 6pt bull elk and some incredible Shiras bulls! If my 24 pref pts are enough then I'll be chasing Shiras with Swift Creek this year in the Teton wilderness.

I believe it takes about 9 pref pts to draw an elk tag in the regular draw for their hunt areas but they are very successful with good, respectable bull elk.

Highly recommend Lost Creek Outfitters and Jimmy Owens. I have hunted with him 3 times and wouldn't hunt with anyone else. He has multiple places in Wyoming.
