Going to be in Colorado for a few weeks. My boots aren't really cold weather boots, so I was thinking I'd just get good socks to go with them. Anyone have suggestions on good comfy socks for colder weather. I've got a few nice wool socks, but was wondering about alpaca fiber socks. Been getting lots of ads lately claiming they're better/warmer than wool.

use sock liners, plus a good wool sock. Sock liners make all the difference in the world for me in cold weather.

I know a lot of people like Danner merino socks for cold weather. Cold feet suck!

Wool socks for sure. Sheeles sells good liners in their stores, not sure if they have them on line. Havent looked.

Darn Tough or SmartWool are the best major brands. Stance are ok but I've had them unravel at the seams fairly easily. Heat Holders are another solid one that's a super small company.

If you need socks LMK. I have some websites that throw some solid SmartWool discounts.

We silicone spray the outside of our boots / shoes w Kiwi or Nikwax to create a moisture barrier. Works super well.

Some solid deals on SW crew socks and base layers. SOMETIMES they go hella deep discount. I picked up two 250 base layers for $46 each earlier this month.

If you're going skiing, I'd rec over the calf vs crew cut.

Ice breaker, Point6, Gordini, and Minus33 are spectacular for ski socks as well.

Lmk if you need any help w these. I can get most of them at 30-50% off sans SmartWool. For Smart wools I can pull OTC light middle and heavy for 30-50% off what we sell them in the store which is like middle to high $20s.

Alpaca is great until it gets wet. Woodrow Gear Company Nada Llama knee highs are great. I have 2 pairs.

After spending time in ND for the oilfield during the fall, I learned proper sock and clothing layering.

Definitely get sock liners. I like the Scheels store brand, even used them as my primary summer boot socks. Smart Wools are good but a little pricey. REI house brand are good, and REI usually has some sort of deal for buying multiple pairs.

I love my Darn Tough socks. Smart Wools are good too. If you are going to be active, the ski/snowboarding socks from companies are a good option.

Go to a Scheels (one in the DFW area), REI, or Sun and Ski. Probably won't really find anything at Academy or Cabelas/Bass Pro, other than outer layer socks.

Used these on our elk hunt in Colorado this year. Walked through a lot of snow and it was the coldest hunt we have had in all the years going up there. As mentioned earlier sock liners and wool socks are the key.

Both are the same weight just different lengths. I ended up gravitated to the longer sock on the hunt. They are expensive but you can't beat Darn Tough socks, plus they have a lifetime guarantee.

Small operation based out of Bozeman. They have baselayers and outerwear but I don't ever see myself spending $200 on a set of long johns.

Probably right up the alley of some of your bougie Vail clientele though.

That's the kinda **** they love - things they can overspend on and then brag to their friends that they can't buy or can't find. It's a weird flex but a consistent flex around here.

Edited to add: especially the Mexico City crowd. They are always trying to find a flex on their other ridiculously wealthy friends. Same folks that come in and drop $3,000 on skis and gear and then toss us $2 as a tip after flying in on their private plane… eyes rolling.

as someone who has literally spent years standing in waders in Trout water; this is it.

Try Farm to Feet brand as well. Take a look at the sock materials as well. Most are not 100% wool. They typically have other synthetics within them as well so it is key to look at the actual wool content. Buy the ones with the most wool%.

Anything specific to look for in a liner? Any specific brands? I've got some socks that could probably double as liners, or better up get dedicated liners?

Mine are white but those should do.

Also, the really thin ones work well with cowboy boots for ease of getting them in and out of the boot.

They legit. Prefer over merino wool now for general use.

If your feet 100% won't get wet (or sweat) Alpaca.

We sent our Alpaca back from the shop last season because of the Number of complaints about them when they get wet.

Another one to not get wet is Bamboo. They're great dry but are terrible damp or wet.

Under. Put it on first then the wool sock. Also if you are wearing thermal underwear, put on the sock
liners, then then underwear then the wool sock and everything will stay in place all day long.
