Was surfing YouTube and came across Texas Plinking 1000y challenge and it looks pretty sweet. Anyone here into long range target shooting? I am no where near proficient enough to hit a target that far away but it would be fun to work towards it. What gun/caliber/optics are you shooting or would recommend?

I'd start with the CheyTac Thor GDG M408 topped with a Hensoldt 6-24x56 to see if you're even going to enjoy the hobby.

Good glass and a good rifle with known ballistics makes it work.
Here's my then 12 yo at in Wyoming shooting 1291 yards and hitting a 30" plate on his 3rd shot with his 6.5 Creedmoor. 36.5 minutes of angle.

I followed a few shooters later and nailed the plate on my 1st shot at same distance. 32.25 MOA with my 7mm STW.

It's a lot of fun and builds a skill set that will allow you to punch a tag in situations where others fail.

Haha! To kinda dip your toe in the water and incrementally see if this sort of thing might appeal to you. We all have to start somewhere right?

I've dabbled in long range and started with a Seekins Precision SP10 in 6.5 with bushnell glass.

Last year I built a Stag10 in 6.5CM topped with a Primary Arms GLx 6-24 x 50 FFP (Athena BPR MIL reticle).

The Seekins is a serious precision gun, heavy, rock solid. The Stag10 is more of a hunting gun that moonlights as a PRS gun. It's a lot shorter and lighter which makes it a lot more comfortable to tote around.

Dont start with gear.

How far can you shoot at the ranges you have access to? Zero point building a 1000y+ gun if the only place you can shoot only goes to 200y.

Also look for what matches that can help learn long range fundamentals are nearby: NRL22, PRS, High Power, etc.

Then build a gun based on what you have available to actually get time behind the trigger on. If all you have is 100y and NRL22 matches, a good .22 set up and trigger time will teach you a lot of what you need to learn to push out further when you get the chance.

Finding a place to shoot 1000y is harder than actually hitting at 1000y.

GA Precision Pinnacle Production Rifle in 6GT. Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x50 DMR3 with GP4 Reticle.

I'm loading my own ammo but if I miss, it's not the gun or ammo.

For 1000y I say training is the place to start. Give me standard targets on flat targets with something like a .308 I can hit targets easily out to 600y pretty easy. Add the wind and elevation and I suck arse. There is a lot more to long distance shooting than people who have never done it realize.

Latest episode had a 6BRA. Never heard of it.

Fun series to watch, normally just a bunch of average joes with their customized set ups.

And you need a buddy to help. I'm not walking 1000y to find out what I hit or didn't hit. Expect someone down there to radio back. Need to have a big rock though they can hide behind in case I'm way off target!!

Thank you. That made me laugh.

In the Marines we could consistently hit a human silhouette(upper body) at 500 yards with an M16 A2 and iron sights. I think they use Acogs now. I was able to hit just above the shoulder on the same target at 1000 yards using iron sights on an M4. At that distance the front post covers the entire target. Every heart beat makes the front post go up and down. This was shooting from a prone position with no rifle rest.

The 1000 yard range at the whittington center in Raton has bunkers under the targets so a buddy can watch your target and give you adjustments.

Long range shooting is incredibly fun. But beware. The better you get at it, the more you spend on it...

I got so into the 1000 yard and 1250 yard shooting, I decided I needed to build a mile gun.

So I started pricing, and decided it might be better to put my kids through college.

I enjoy that channel and watching the guys shoot. In the end it seems to come down to who has put in the range time vs who put in the money on a custom setup.

I would suggest reading this book Long Range Shooting Handbook: The Complete Beginner's Guide to Precision Rifle Shooting https://a.co/d/aa7o6hI

After that figure out a caliber you will enjoy shooting get the range and use what you read.
