Have some people that want to lease one of our bulls from us for several months. I've never leased a bull before, so wondering what a monthly rate would be?

$7/day or $50/cow to be covered is a jumping off point.

You ain't got time for covering cows, we need you getting your organization up to speed approving our NFA items......

If it is a registered bull, you can charge by the pregnancy or live calf.


Make sure they have a clean healthy herd. You don't want to bring disease back to your herd.

Have a discussion as to what happens if and when the bull gets injured.

Visit the guys herd and look at the condition of his cows, fences and facilities before you jump on this.

There are several big firms that do this - so google it.

How many cows?
-----More than 10 cows it would be to their advantage to just buy their own bull
What is the herds medical history?
-----You dont want your bull contracting something and bringing it into your herd.
Why "several months"?
-----If a smaller herd: run the cows through a chute, give them a shot of Lutalyse and you can have your bull back in 65 days

Commercial Bull Semen can run $10-$25 a straw. If a bull attempt at least 2 breedings per cow then you are not unreasonable at $50 a cow

All I know is a bull's work is never done…

Look at the classifieds in the Livestock Weekly. Plenty of people doing this with their rates.

Add in the cost of Trichomoniasis in your herd after you get him back. At least 2 negative tests before he returns to your herd.

You going to rent pigs too?

Tell the leaser he can't keep the mountain oysters

This. Don't put anyone else's cows in your pasture or rent your bull. In addition to the Trich mentioned, lots can go wrong in someone else's pasture. Your bull is the most expensive and important part of your herd.

Tell them to buy their own or rent from someone in the bull rental business.

Why do they want to rent your bull, instead of using AI/a bull rental place?
