Few weeks ago my boy and I went out hunting in San Saba. Friend has about 200 acres, that he's taken a deer once in in 17 years. He just doesn't hunt. Set up a couple ground blinds a week before youth weekend and made some home brew corn blend and persimmon mix and tossed it out a few times with great success. I gotta say, for a 15 yo boy my son has some trigger discipline. He wanted to wait for a doe that obviously didn't have fawns and a buck that was "just right". He has never tagged a deer before, so this will be his first tags punched. 12 does came out and stayed on the FREEZER FILLER (that's what he's calling the home brew). He picked the bigger of the 12 and placed a beautiful lung shot with the Winchester .243 rifle. She ran about 70 yards and piled up. We waited about 30 mins and we talked about what he should expect when we go tracking her. I talked to him about respecting the land, the animal given to us by God and respecting the tool that was used to take her. We tracked her after waiting 30 mins and we both had a moment when we found her. His first deer! I think I was more happy than him. I explained to him how I was taught to respect the animal by the man who taught me to hunt, and always push the tongue back into the animals mouth. That's something that always stuck with me for some reason. Any way, I field dressed the first deer for all my kids. He watched and learned.
When I was done it was still really early, 0900 maybe. I asked him what he wanted to do. He said stay and hunt some more. So I walked back to the barn and grabbed the gator to load up the doe to take her to the truck. I loaded her up and he went back to the ground blind. While I was taking care of doe business, he was taking care of buck business. I come walking back to the blind and see him out of the blind, about 20 yards west of it and I ask him why he's out. He said he got another one. I thought probably another doe since we are looking to fill the freezer. He says, "Dad, I got him." I stopped dead in my tracks. He said he walked out of nowhere to eat the home brew and he put one right above his right shoulder. He said the buck came to where he was there in the pic and started thrashing around, so he got out of the blind because he wouldn't stop thrashing and he didn't want him to suffer. He said he had to make a decision to shoot him again, so he shot him through the same hole he shot him the first time.
Fellas, I just wanted to brag a bit on my boy here. I don't internet much but this is one of those things I just wanted to share. I put pics of his deer as well as the recipe of the FREEZER FILLER. There was a recipe that called for a different flavor drink mix that made no sense to me, so I swapped it with red. Btw, we are lucky to have no pig pressure where we are.
For the record, he field dressed his own buck.
