Hunting this past Wednesday my oldest shot a banded mottled duck but when reporting the band to the system nothing comes up and it says the band hasn't been recorded yet.

Anybody ever have that happen? Does that mean it was recently banded and the band just isn't in the system yet?

I've had it happen with a banded robin I found in my yard

It may just not have been inputed into the system yet. Or might of slipped through the cracks and never was/will be. Does it look old and weathered?

I'd keep checking back for a few months and if it still doesn't show up I'd call and inquire.

Doesn't look that old. I'll just stay on top of it. We're getting the bird mounted and thought it would be cool for my boy to have the frames certificate to go with the mounted bird.

Check with TPWD, like a regional bird biologist. More than likely they banded it, and sooner or later you'll get around to talk to someone who knows.

That makes sense for a mottled duck.

That's what a biologist told me also that they band in August and September because they catch them with blue wings and it can take months for their data to show up in USFW system. I have shot 2 that I couldn't get any data for until January. 1 pintail and one bluewing. Also tell your oldest congratulations!

Keep checking. Unfortunately, there are some that never get entered.

Got an email that the person who banded the bird hasn't submitted the info but the government is going to notify them that the bird has been recovered and see what happens.

For sure.

The big one is 13 and goes 5'11" 170. He's been shooting his own shotgun for a few years now. The younger is 9 and despite the gun safety lessons isn't quite responsible enough to trust him fully. Working on it and I need to be more diligent in his lessons but the 13-year old is the kid we could leave home by himself for a week and he'd eat healthy, brush his teeth, and do his homework. The younger would burn the house down.

Sounds like what my 9 and 5 year old will end up being like.

It was a beautiful day to be outside yesterday. Went back to the old homeplace and my son and I had a great little morning shoot. He goes to pick up birds and finds not one, but two pieces of jewelry. Can't say I've ever seen that in all my years of chasing ducks.

Also, we entered the band info online last night, and both were in the system. Turns out both were banded last year on a nearby location.

Thanks guys. Its an old river channel that, while still active, doesn't have much flow unless after a good rain. Pretty special place. Me and my son have started a Thanksgiving tradition of slipping over there and having an early woody shoot. Then he shoots two bands in one day!
