Left Dallas this AM to head out to our normal haunts. It's been spotty with the rain so finding good cover and areas that weren't affected by the drought will be key. Watched the US drought Monitor Map all summer so have some ideas.

Central Kansas looks abysmal. Very dry, all cut to the ground.

Downed 2 rooster and 4 quail.

We put a bunch of birds up today itbwas just a struggle to get them shot. They were either missed, or came up with empty guns, or got up just out of range.

Huge numbers of quail and every covey.

Imgur stopped uploading and I had poor service. Was unable to get pictures up. We stayed further E than we have in the past and ended up driving west to some spots that have been good to us in the past. We lost 1 bird that was knocked down hard, they are tough birds this would prove true in the coming days.

Day and 2 and 3(half day) we put a ton more birds up. We just really struggled to kill them. I put 3 roosters amd 1 quail on the ground but didn't make it into the bag. The 3 roosters bounced and ran off the quail fell in the thickest CRP and was unrecoverable.

We also added in a lot of misses. While it was very frustrating and difficult to stay positive we did our best.

Day 3 we went East and South while heading home and the land was in poor condition. Amd we didn't find habitat or birds.

What shotgun shells you using on pheasant?

Sounds like a great hunt. Huge difference between hunting wild birds in their native habitat and hunting the " plantation birds" at a hunting lodge. A wild pheasant running across an open field is awesome to see. A good pointer makes it easier to get in range.

Mostly lead #5s at 1300FPS. Windy I'll throw som #4s in. Modified choke

If we're hunting fields with ponds switch to steel/bismuth heavy hammer upland #5 @1350FPS

Back in the 90s in panhandle I used copper plated lead. Made a big difference.

It's a very intense trip I must say. We cover about 15-18 miles a day on foot. In thick cover for a lot of it.

Though when we talk to the people staying at the hotel we're seeing 1.5-2+x the birds they are.
