I'm sure there's lots of you that have had experience with this. I was walking up to try and help him when he got scared and jerked himself free. His leg was completely broken and he ran off on 3 legs.

What do you think the probability is of him getting caught by a coyote or something? He was running pretty fast on 3, but I'm not sure it will be fast enough.

Edit to add: Located in Wilson county, so I'm not sure if we have mountain lions in the area, but I'm betting there's at least 1 or 2 around here.

Hopefully he makes it a few more days and somebody will shoot him this weekend, so he can have a quick death.

Too young. Let him wa…. err, let him limp.

Yeah, he actually looks like he would be a pretty nice deer in a couple of years. Pretty nice for this area anyway.

Are you kidding? Wilson County is the mountain lion capital of Texas. They've already eaten that buck by now.

It is never a spike, doe, or ugly cull is it.

Had a really young 13 pt we were watching/waiting to mature end up at the bottom of a ravine. Dummy.

Animals are extremely resilient. Over the years have cut out or helped deer out of fences a lot. Usually it breaks their hip or pulls it out of joint and they won't survive that. If it breaks it completely down low it will sometimes eventually fall off and if it does not get infected they will survive. I have seen three legged deer run as good as one with four legs.
I have seen some that I would not have given a wooden nickel they would survive that did.
Depends also on the predator population and if he can continue to get food and water of course.

In my neighborhood we have 200 or so. See them limping all the time with obviously broken legs from cars. Always wonder how it ends up for them.

Since September we've had a very small buck, with a broken leg, that has hunkered down in my backyard. He is still limping, but generally walks around all day. He gets really shy when other bucks roam through. Mid October, we had two bucks tied up less than 100' from him and he didn't even get up off the ground.

We're in Karnes county and we have not seen any mountain lion signs in the area.

We shot an aoudad once that was missing one of his hooves. Found it later stuck in a snare. He was doing more than fine and weighed just shy of 300lbs.

We have lots of gimpy deer in our neighborhood (Boerne area). We have coyotes and of course Nexdoor thinks we have a ton of mountain lions, but they don't seem to get the limping deer very often....

From a few seasons back. I thought I was doing this guy a favor. Afterwords, the neighbor said it had no problem jumping in and out of his protein pen.

I hate seeing deer get hung up in fences. Years ago I came across a young Buck with his leg hung up in barbed wire much like in the OP. I managed to get him worked loose without getting too close to him but he went berserk when I approached and I thought he was going to injure himself worse. Thankfully I managed to get him untangled and he ran off just fine with what appeared to be only minor cuts from the wire.

Then last year I found only a deer's hind leg dangling in a fence, where obviously it died an excruciating death and was devoured by coyotes. A very unsettling sight!

There is a buck in my neighborhood that got injured pretty badly on a fence when he was young . He hung out in someone's yard, someone who took pity on him and provided him with food and water, while he healed up. He's still scarred up pretty visibly but doing fine. He's a good looking buck.

I found a guy on a fence last week. He had to be put down.

Don't mind them getting shot but I hate to see slow, painful death. Nature's a *****.

Always a bad day when you lose parts in a fence...
