Nah, one cylinder wasn't firing for some reason (undiagnosed at this point) then ignited and blew the rod apart and as you see... outta the block!

Yep, threw a rod. Probably piston bearing gave out, piston jammed, and the rod struck it and then into the side of the block.

Seems like that is exactly what happened.

We're taking the whole thing apart and seeing what we can keep and use on the other two engineers that are the exact same.
