Old Baldy, Chock Bluff campground, and there was a Scenic Overlook on one of the highways, you could see miles and miles of Texas. We spent the night there during a thunderstorm when I was a kid. I don't think any of us slept, it was the most awesome lightning display that kept us up.

We might be talking about the same thing, but there is a nice rest area on 173. It is closer to Bandera than it is to Hondo. It is on the east side of 173.

45 miles up the road (187?) to Sabinal Canyon-Utopia. Pretty part of the state.

Bandera or Tarpley are really good suggestions

That rest area is now CLOSED. Apparently too many young hooligans and too many drug dealers using it.

Highway dept. closed it.

Back to topic: many B&Bs aroung Utopia/Con Can area that will fit the bill.

Try these folks:

Away from the crowd, nice accomodations.

Taught their kids in school. Good folks.

Well, that sucks. That is a nice area.

I'll be watching it in Bandera.

Another idea, though probably everyone and their dog will be doing this, there are plenty of spots to get out and look on the twisted sisters. A Saturday in October, there will be a lot of folks riding. Also, maybe a little farther than you would want to travel.

You might try the Lutheran church in Quihi, or the Methodist church down the road. It isn't the hill country, but it is nice county (I might be a little biased, hunted that area for 30ish years).

Where in bandera? Seems like the good spots are all charging per car to park.
